HOUSE SWAPPING/HOUSE EXCHANGE-WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT?

House swapping
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

House swapping is the increasingly popular activity of two homeowners living at each other's houses for a set period. Homeowner A would live in Home B for a time period, while Homeowner B lives in Home A.

It is usually used as low cost vacation accommodation and is a private arrangement between the two parties. The arrangement has several benefits - neither has to pay for lodging, the home itself is usually more comfortable than a hotel, and plants/pets may be cared for for free. House swapping is most popular with in-town residents planning to vacation in another major city. There are many organizations online that facilitate such swaps for free or a fee.

Well the idea seems workable and u can imagine the cost one can save by avoiding the hotels. When u r on a vacation one tends to spend most of the time outside ur living place. I luv to swap my apartments in Malaysia and Dubai with someone living in an interesting place.

Sorry rayyz nothing much to rob at those apartments.

A bit confusing issue.

I general new ideas are tempting and people like to experiment. Recalling the concept of TimeShare which lost its birghtness now but still many people get attracted to the idea although so many have regretted participating in that scheme.

Gold Mania is another concept that attracted greedy people or those who cannot do proper calculations. Again this concept will sleep for some time and then someone will awaken it after 10 or 20 years.

Back to our subject. I think many people will like the idea but here we have to be careful about many issues involved:

1. Cultural differences. If the concept is successful in Europe for example, it does not necessarily mean it will be a success in the Middle East,

2. Security issue. With the craziness going around in the world, one would not trust even himself. What about having strangers occupying my place. Mind you, in my country - guess this law is prevailing in most countries - we have to inform the authorities if we have guests staying overnight,

3. Comfort. Staying at somebodies place might not be comfortable specially for a very short period. One needs time to get used to the place. Also the caution not to damage anything. On the other hand, worried and wondering what's going on at own place. You might suggest packing and storing "special" and personal belongings. My God this is a project by itself specially for us in the Middle East, our houses are overloaded with necessary and unnecessary stuff and it might take a month to pack and another month to unpack :D

4. About pets and plants. What if the counter part is not aware or has no time to take care of them. We are talking about sensitive things being pets or plants.

What else? hmmm.

Just imagining. Emptying wardrobe, fridge, bar, display units, chest of drawers, dressing unit. Then go to the other place. Start shopping for basic things. Might need to do excessive laundry. Familiarization. Then at the end, making sure everything is in place, pack and go home. Unpacking and getting things from store, laundry.

My GOD I would rather go and stay in a tree-house in Turkey and forget about everything LOL

Grow up girl!!!

What on earth would I ever do with a cat? I can't sell it nor can I eat it. LOL. Handing your cat to someone else to take care off was a much safer bet.

I beg to differ. Even a place like Doha which was like safe as hell few years ago, isn't at all safe anymore. Remember, trouble never tells you before coming!

One month or even 15 days is more than sufficient time for me to get to know the 2nd hand market in the country and sell off your stuff before I leave your home completely empty.

You could still get decent price, for 2nd hand a/c, tv, sofa sets and furniture.

We're talking about complete strangers here.

I agree with you GG. Its like an open invitation 'Please stay and rob my home'. Great potential for people using those free websites to register and have great vacations followed by heavy booty on the way back.

Oh really? I am hearing this for the first time....Is it really possible to let a stranger stay in your place..how safe is it? Not nesessary the other person keeps your house neat and clean..and take care of your things...I wouldnt do that. But if its for a known person I dont mind.

I remember seeing a movie on this subject. It starred Kate Winslet, can't recall the name though. It released last year.
