Help me with Traveler's Checks Please

Hello Everyone... I just arrived in Doha on Monday and am still getting settled at work and home. I brought $500 in Traveler's Checks to exchange when I arrived and low and behold, I've been told that Qatar no longer accepts Visa Traveler's Checks.

I do have a credit card but cannot get cash from that account and my ATM card will not work in this country (my bank's fault, not Qatar.) So I can shop for food etc. where they accept Credit Cards but have no cash for small shops, taxis etc.

Does anyone know if I can exchange Traveler's Checks for cash?

Thanks

Thanks for everyone's help. I started an account with QNB and was able to deposit the checks... They'll be on hold for 21 days before I can use the money. However I did receive check from my employer and was able to chash that.

Finally able to eat something besides the microwave popcorn I brought from home!

Just FYI, don't bother to bring Travelers Checks to Qatar.

I cashed some of my traveler checques through HSBC but you have to open an account with them. I also just used a few at Carrefour to get the change in Qatari Riyal. I would go in on different days and buy maybe ten riyal worth of food and pay with a travelers checque. You lose on the exchange rate but at least you have cash in your pockets.

there is an exhange place called "gulf exchange" that I managed to change mines @. It is close to the sofitel hotel. Has a big green sign outside. They will need your passport & they did ask me for the receipt of when I purchased the cheques, if you dont have the receipt just tell them you lost it and they should be able to sort you out.

you can withdraw cash from ATMs with your credit card.

Not sure, try HSBC, St. Chartered Bank, or Al Fardan Exchange, Gulf Finance.

They would be able to advise you better.

Sorry for you.

All the best.

Hey - have you tried going directly to the banks? That's the only luck I've had with mine, by the way :) I brought American Express traveller's cheques. Will never do that again - not worth the pain in the a--...
