Friend bought 400GB WD XHDD Drive
By newkidontheblock •
Why all Hard Drive and CD/DVD's are not exactly the given size as what is written on the Label?
For Example: 400GB Ext. HDD is only 370GB Free or Usable Space. for DVD CD's, 4.7GB but it's only 4.5GB can be used.
Thank you for your comment.
Manually or computerize 1024bytes = 1 M.b (Mega bytes)
1024M.b. = 1 G.b (Giga bytes)
1024G.b = 1 T.b (Tera bytes)
And so On. now 400 G.b. = 400 * 1024 = 409600 M.b
If U R getting 350000 M.b = 342 G.b (approx)
of the free usable space.
Rest are used by the system to share with the system files.
I totally agree with you tallg and Mr Saliq i thought 1024 G.B ( Giga Byte) was equal to 1 T.B (Tera Byte) but first time i have read that it is Tella Byte
Read my comments above sheikh_salik88. In this case 400GB does not = 400 * 1024 MB. It's 400 * 1000.
Also, after gigabytes comes terabytes, not tellabytes.
They tried to introduce MEBIbyte recently, so MEBI = 1024 and MEGA = 1000. Not sure if it's really caught on though.
What's really bad is that the hard-drive manufactures and operating system designers can't agree on a common language. It wouldn't matter what MB meant if you plugged in the drive and the capacity was the same as advertised.
Didn't someone try to define another unit, the mibabyte, or something similar, to try to solve the confusion. Of course, no one thought it was a good idea.
i bought 250 mb of ram
I know, i splashed out a little

Note that the advertised capacity of storage devices such as harddrives and memory cards assumes 1GB = 1000MB.
But your computer measures 1GB = 1024MB (which is the correct way).
Hence when your computer reports the capacity of the device it will be less than advertised. This is the manufacturers being a bit cheeky.
So in this case;
400 GB x 1000 = 400000 MB
400000 MB / 1024 = 390 GB
The remaining difference is due to the data that comes on the device when you buy it, such as install files etc.
AS U SEE ALL all the cd/dvd/usb hard drive or pendive do not give u full usable space coz syatem require some space for it sharing and also it is depend upon your o/s as which and what ... hardware such as motherboard is also an valid issue.next time just don't go by size and price but according your requirement.
