Philippines bans Dutchman in 'crying cop' case

A Dutch activist blamed for making a Philippine policeman cry was deported and permanently banned from the country, the immigration bureau said Thursday.

Van Beersum is an "undesirable alien" who violated the terms of his tourist visa by joining a protest, immigration bureau spokeswoman Antonette Mangrobang told AFP.

"The activities he engaged in do not fall under those of a regular tourist, which are health, business or pleasure", she added.

The activist was photographed yelling at a weeping Filipino riot policeman at an anti-government protest during President Benigno Aquino's annual policy address to parliament on July 22.

Photographs of the incident, showing policeman Joselito Sevilla crying as he held back van Beersum and other activists, spread around the world on the Internet,

The policeman later said he was crying from exhaustion and hunger after a long stint securing the area for Aquino's speech.

Van Beersum was detained at Manila airport on Tuesday as he prepared to leave the country.

The Dutchman, who said he is 21, alleged in a posting on his Facebook account late Wednesday that his 30-hour detention was a government ploy to distract attention from its shortcomings.

"This harassment is obviously done to distract the people from the actual problems that the country faces, such as the almost total domination of its economy by foreign capitalists and the complicity of comprador puppets such as Aquino," he added.

Yes I think the Dutch guy is a distraction. If he was leaving anyway, let him leave and then ban him from ever coming back. Arresting him for a few days and then letting him go is pointless.

well I would agree.. its just that the cops were working on an empty stomach and long hours waiting for his highness to come and make his speech.. The Dutch guy was just a distraction. Someone had to be blamed so they must have picked up this Dutch guy and I suppose he was not the only foreigner at the protests.

good old joe, this particular policeman was not beating up protesters.

it's usually because the protesters start first. if you can read what the photojournalist wrote, the protesters started it by dismantling the barricades setup by police as well as the street barriers that separate the traffic lanes. they also threw rocks at the police. when the police retaliate to protect themselves these protesters complain and cry that their rights are being violated.

if you can read this article, the police planned to be peaceful and they tried to be nice.

it's nothing new. the protesters do this every year

TO GOOD OLD JOE- DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE READING? HE WAS ARRESTED BECAUSE HE VIOLATED THE TERMS OF HIS TOURIST VISA. IF YOU ARE IN HIS POSITION AND YOU HAVE A TOURIST VISA HERE IN QATAR, AND WHILE YOU ARE IN QATAR, YOU JOIN A PROTEST RALLY, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE QATAR GOVERNMENT WILL DO TO YOU? EVERY COUNTRY HAS ITS OWN LAWS. HERE IN QATAR, EVEN YOU HAVE A WORKING VISA OR A RP, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO JOIN PROTEST RALLIES OR ELSE, YOU WILL BE JAILED AND DEPORTED. IF YOU DONT FOLLOW THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY YOU TRAVELLED, THEN DO NOT TRAVEL TO THAT COUNTRY.

Did you say they were not violent to the protestors.. I suppose the pictures don't lie and they tell about them abusing and beating the protestors until this guy lost his marbles and his mental balance too

it's the first time i've heard that there actually is a law against foreigners who arrive on tourist visas taking part in protest rallies. foreign girls from peta protest naked in front of zoos many times and i don't think they get arrested.

this became a big issue because he was a foreigner who behaved horribly to a terribly exhausted police officer who wasn't even violent to the protesters.

he probably didn't get arrested before that because the immigration officials were lazy and decided to just wait for him at the airport when he's about to leave.

...I thought he did not get arrested because he was white with a fancy passport and he came in on a "visa on arrival" document"...just wondering would they have treated another Asian the same way and been respectful and compassionate like they were to this Dutch guy.

sorry, i know i'm flooding and it's actually old news. i normally don't like cops. the pic of him showing a peace sign before all the commotion did me in

this link is the narrative of the photojournalist (it's his google+ acct) who took the pictures above on what really happened, in case anyone's interested

the deportation is actually funny. who gets deported when you're already on your way out of the country you're getting deported from? but just for the sake of this arrogant guy (who does not even feel sorry at all) not getting away with what he did, i forgive the immigration officials this time

there are lots of pictures on his fb page showing van beersum with joma sison, leader of the communist party of the philippines. a mao tse tung wannabe who's still in hiding at the netherlands at the expense of his comrades' lives

i know how these leftists behave during the annual state of the nation rallies. some of my college friends used to take part in them. they provoke the police on purpose, cross the legally permitted lines to stage their protests and destroy government property. sometimes they trespass residential areas nearby to get to the congress building. when the police take action they cry human rights violation. lousy self-righteous hypocrites.

if i didn't get enough food and sleep for two days, tried to be nice to protesters because of the maximum tolerance policy and end up getting shouted at by a foreigner who probably doesn't really understand a thing about the real issues of the country and just shouts leftist propaganda (and who also admitted that the crying cop wasn't actually one of those who were beating the protesters), i would probably cry too.

this guy is lucky that he didn't get arrested on the spot for disrespecting a man in uniform. let's see him try that in communist china or north korea.

....Just curious to know what is this pleasure visa or is that the one wherein you are not held accountable for going overboard with the good things in Manila, Mabini. Olangapo, etc

..one minute beating and bashing up the protestors and the next minute crying and feeling sorry for his sins...he must have had a panic attack from hitting and beating up the protestors

crying is not a sign of being gay. it only shows that you are humans. if humans doesnt cry, then maybe you are not human.
