A crime to be born a woman?

Not my words, but the words of the father whose daugthers shocking rape and death stunned the world. Wil there be real change now?
Or is it time to point out bad things happen in other countries too as the normal Indian defence.. Only if you admit you have a problem can you begin to solve it. How many more women must be raped or killed before the culture changes?

Indiashould be ashamed: Being born a girl isn't 'a crime'
“It is a crime to be born a woman in India,” said the father of the Delhi gang rape victim. As four men are sentenced today for her brutal murder, Anita Anand reflects on Indian society's treatment of women.

With his head bowed and body tensed with emotion, the father of the 23-year-old victim of the Delhi gang rape looked up and addressed the camera directly: "It is a crime to be born a woman in India." He was responding to the three-year sentence, last week, handed to the juvenile involved in the fatal attack on his daughter. Today's sentencing of the four Delhi slum dwellers convicted of her murder, one of the most shocking sexual assaults in recent Indian history, may not bring him any more comfort.
Outside the court, throughout the duration of the trial, crowds have been gathered demanding the death penalty for the remaining five attackers; Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta. The ringleader of the group, Ram Singh, never made it to trial, and was found hanging in his cell in March this year. Politicians have vowed to make rapists pay the heaviest prices; the public have declared that they will wipe out those who attack their daughters. Even the Indian chateratti, who pride themselves on their liberal values and expensive educations have been joining the clamour for blood.
The rhetoric around this case has always been volcanic. The victim was middle-class, studying to be a paramedic, and had been attacked in a decent part of town. As a result her case dominated rolling news coverage in India and spread around the world. It was a terrible, brutal attack, but it was far from unique. It wasn’t even a watershed moment in India.
If you enter those words: "It is a crime to be born a woman in India" into a basic Google search, you will get a depressing snap shot of the state of women in the country today from the very first page of results.

I feel this is the reason for rapes in India - One leading to the other...
Lack of leadership and political governance
Illiteracy (Moral and Vocational)+ Overpopulation
Unemployment
Idle mind is a devils workshop ( drugs, porno, alchohol)
No job so no girlfriends
No sexual gratification
Sexual frustration
Jealousy against educated and well to do girls
Male Ego
Weak Judiciary, so no fear of death or life imprisonment
Rape
Yes Boxbe, we seem more people killed for spurious reasons.
There needs to be a culture change away from Indians saying things like, women should not be out late at night alone to tell your young men that rape is unacceptable.
Implement the sharia law in india and see the difference
Yes but Miely Cirus got a very good feedback from the international community.
"but it projects women as a sex material that needs to be used."
I can't really see this as an excuse. What about Madonna, Lady GaGa and lately Miley Cirus.. They use "erotica" to sell songs..
The lyrics of the song are shallow, vulgar & derogatory for the women itself. Sensitizing these kind of songs by the public & media is adding fuel to the fire. There should be a radical shift in understanding the role of women beyond sex material & child rearing. Men & women alike need strong economic independence, inheritance rights, right to marry, political participation, maternal rights and more importantly freedom from the societal pressure to look fit and fair and modern or traditional. Modern doesn’t mean to wear small clothes, modernity comes with the evolution of intellectual processes and to liberate from all slavery.
Chikni chameli, munni badnaam hui, fevicol se, pinky to name a few are the songs topping the hit list in Bollywood chart and youtube. Nowadays, these songs became as key to blockbuster. The portrayal of women in these songs, by any means is glamorous or appealing, but it projects women as a sex material that needs to be used.
I would agree. This case is a watershed moment for such crimes. The media has played a major part in highlighting the issues, whilst the people have found a voice. The government has already started to act.
Change takes time, but things are moving in the right direction...
From a personal perspective, I hope the rapists in this case get the death penalty and a swift execution..
Do want the Indian woman said who wrote this article and put in google, being a woman is a crim in India and see the results.
As she also stated this is far from an isolated incident.
take risk .. go out in the late evenings ... even when it [ roaming ] was banned by the police ....
They do it and keep this roaming secret from their innocent parents ....
I would appreciate Indian media for having covered this incident in a way that the whole country came to know about it and many were on the streets forming pressure groups for amending rape laws. This showed people in general were united to change the society for the better. Now the laws have been amended and many fast track courts have been set up to resolve pending rape case. This is a positive change in the society. Hopefully the guilty will be sentenced tomorrow.
I feel stray rape cases do not really shows the culture of a country but how the society deals with them, does.
In this part of the world, many rapes dont get reported or published nor anyone comes on to the streets.
RIP you are good at avoiding answering question. What 'pretend the problem doesn't exist'you're talking about? Bring forward your proof. India has billion population. 4 Indians commit a gang rape and you call this a major problem Indians are having difficulties to tackle? Come on man, don't insult your brain. I am sure you can come with a better reply than this one. You can do better than that.
Palancole as I suspected, trying to use the poor device of saying 'look at what they do' to pretend the problem doesn't exist.
To continue from my previous comment, I would say this was a heinous crime and the culprits should be dealt with strongly. Rapists, paedophiles, serial killers, repeated criminals, all should be dealt with severe punishments. We law abiding citizens can do away with them. We do not need them. They are weeds which should be be thrown away in the garbage. Why would I worry to reform some weeds into plants than can be productive. That would be against the nature of those weeds. Just get rid of psychologists, human rights drummers, lawyers and we will have a better and functional society. This is what all societies,in the world, should do IMHO.
RIP, 4-5 rapists gang-raping a girl isn't representative of a whole country, is it? What change do you want to bring to the Indian culture? I am not defending the Indians, but if they start talking about Europe then what do we have to say? How about American soldiers gang raping women in Africa or any country they go to war? They are more educated than those slum dwellers! Rapists have no nationality. They're just evil.
RIP answer your own question in the European or American context: How many more women must be raped or killed before the culture changes on the streets of London,Paris ,Berlin or Rome? How many rapists in Europe get away with light charges and punishment?
Crimes are all connected.
Though in India Gender Testing is Illegal but every year half-a-million female foetuses are terminated which of course has a huge negative impact on the society.
Dowry, complicated marriages, closed cultural thoughts of not having a bride/bridegroom from other families, snail mail justice system,Chai Pani(Bribery) are making it more difficult.
But the best solution is our Youth.India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 & more than 65% below the age of 35. By 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years. Every third person in an Indian city today is a youth. If we youths make our mind & fight for it, I am sure we can make it.
It is really unfair if a criminal is given a lesser punishment, just because he is not a major by age , though the crime he commited is most BARBARIC and INHUMAN.
I am sure this criminal when released from jail after the 3 years , will be no diffrent from what he is . I am sure he will again indulge in similar crimes as he is not a human being and he deserves nothing better than capital punishment
Being Women not Crime..But the Question is what is mean by Woman...
Being a woman anywhere isn’t a crime. Being such a horny animal is.
very true pirate lover they have started raping maids here in doha now
Being an Indian Resident by birth, i really hate my country,,,,,there is no strict law,,,Politicians themselves are Rapist, murderers, and many more,,,,,so, to end this prolem, first of all, any gudwill ambassador shud come forward and let ppl realise that this is the bitter truth,,,,,there is only 1 solution for such ppl i.e. GROUND ZERO :)
This case is just among one those few cases that has got highlighted specially because a girl was brutally murdered. There are many cases of rape that do not get reported to the authorities either because of the prevalent extremely slow system of justice or because of the fear of loss of the family honor.
Though I would agree with the words of the father who lost his daughter and he is not far from the truth however, I am not sure how should this story be read in context:

So mudhassir what made them rape women in India before the movies and the internet? Was it books?
i've said this before and i'll say it again..anything less than death is just another failure of the judiciary system..the liberals can 'barbarian' and 'stone-age' me all they want; but in cases like this, an eye for an eye is the only way..if up to me, i would first let them feel the joys of forced backdoor love in prison for a while and then hang them in public, of course after being castrated. It would go some way towards realization of that girl's pain in her dying moments..if you think i'm sick, close your eyes and imagine yourself in that dark bus with those guys doing to you what they did to her..exactly!
it is clear young generation are getting spoiled by movies and by internet.
Have they got death penalty or life imprisonment...nothing is mentioned
The crime has occured during december 2012 and its ten months still the punishment is yet to be declared postponed to friday maybe they are searching for more evidences before they give verdict
it is a crime if u let go the rapist
