couple fighting

spicemom
By spicemom

was a traffic light today and my son brought my attention to a 4WD parked on the side of the road and a couple were having an argument with hands flying all over and the guy actually hit the woman and slapped her a few times and the lady was crying uncontrollably . this is the second time i am witnessing this.why cant they go home and argue? why does it have to be in public?i can imagine how the woman is feeling .i know everyone has a temper but can we try to control it to some extent at least?

All I know is that ANY man who puts his hands on a women is a punk and a coward!!!! Unless it is in self defense and even the normally you can maybe hold her hands until she is tired of trying to struggle. Honestly the best thing to do is walk away and clear your head, then try to talk like mature adults. I have to say this one more time ANY man that puts his hands on a woman is a COWARD!!!! If I offend anyone by saying that then I guess your one of the cowards.

Certainly...my neighbour believes it to be more acceptable to be 'respectably' married and get hit than kick him out.

So sad

And if he does this in the car...I hate to think the thrashing she gets at home.

Are you sure it was two guys fighting over the boyfriend?

Thanks PH for understanding... I believe all women should be treated with respect and men who beat women are weak human beings.

I don't think they think its okay to be hit once in a while..

but I do think you are spot on about the support system.  People will put up with alot in this world for the sake of small pleasures.

however, by standing up for the women perhaps they will go home and realize that people disagree with the opinion that abuse is okay in even small doses and thereby teaching our/their own daughters and sons that such things are inexcusable.

Small actions can make the biggest difference. Even when it harms the one doing them!

May Allah protect us all from the repercussions in doing good!

I dont think its ok to hit your wife. Infact if my husband does it i'll pack up n leave. I'm saying that since you're the third party you might get into trouble if the wife says " no he didnt hit me, this lady is crazy' and that some women may do that.

By jassKat• 26 Apr 2008 20:21
jassKat

If I see anyone bullying or hitting anyone else I feel compelled to do something. If I am not in the position to help, I will simply call the police and stay nearby to make sure the victim gets the help they need.

It doesnt matter if it is a husband hitting a wife or a man beating another man. That fact that some people are justifying it as ok because he is her husband is sick.

The reason I'm said it is becasue of experience... A couple of years ago a friend of mine got jailed coz she broke a guy's nose becasue he hit his wife in front of her. Now the lady who got hit was her friend and the guy filed a complaint agianst my friend coz she broke his nose. I know my friend should've just complained to the police but even if she did the guy would've gotten away. Finally I had to go to the police station to get her out!!!

I'm not saying that qatari women ike to be abused just that some women dont have it in them to stand up and fight for themselves. And they think its ok to be hit once in a while compared to being without a husband and a support system.

By diamond• 26 Apr 2008 20:10

Someonenew, I am from Qatar and I would have no hesitation to intervene if I had seen that incident.  However, I can understand expatriates not feeling so confident to do that.

And in my experience the police do care about domestic violence.  It is considered very shameful at best for a man to hit a woman.

I totally understand your case spicemom and diamond girl I would advice you never to interfere in a country like Qatar. You never know what could happen. What if the lady had turned around and told you to mind your own business? What would you have done? Most women who get beaten up by their husbands love their husbands very much and sometimes they really dont mind especially in some communities where its ok to beat your woman up. Besides we really donno what was happening in there. Its best not to interfere. If you were in the US or Eurpoe you could call the police but in Doha I dont think the police would really care if the woman is the guy's wife.

I fail to see the humour in this horrible situation.

physical abuse is probably just a small part of the abuse the women receives.

The emotional abuse by our spouses is more difficult to pinpoint and gain support from others.

we don't know who is at fault or what kind of mistake she might have done which leads the situation on this stage .... really difficult to judge ! but again raising a hand on a woman is a sign of a weak man !

2 kinds of public ... 1) who witness the secen 2) did not witness but they heard and share their views/comments

1st kind of public is really shame for the couple where their identity is divulge !

2nd kind of public is like you and me .... we don't know couple name nationality etc... so in this case this makes no difference, spicemon did the right thing to share the story with us without disclosing their identitly !

Yes if she would have mentioned their names/nationality then i can say she had put them into public again !

So, sorry I don't agree with you that she has again put the in public.

No no offence but this is just my point of view

Good point Speed, it's very different to intervene in the street, when there are more people around, then pulling over your car, going to their's and trying to intervene, as a single woman alone with a child, that would be very dangerous.  I would advise against any woman (and most men) trying to intervene in that situation, better to report to the police.

Hitting women is wrong though.

This really depends on the situation ... if couple are fighting inside the car then am sure no one can approach them due to their privacy in the car!! it's always better to call the police .. never take law in your hands!

If they are fighthing in the market or on the street yes it's easy to intervene !

fighting on the road is very dangerous...its one of the causes of road accidents. and yes i agree with you spicemom, they better keep their cool till they reach home. but hitting a woman is still not acceptable.

Isn't it disappointing to know that in Korea beating your wife is OK but beating someone on the street is a crime punishable by deportation.  Good grief.

Physical abuse towards females is one of my pet hates.

In the US or anywhere else in the West I would intervene, here I might, depending on the situation, in spicemom's case I would probably have taken the liscense number and called the police, however I would be worried, law enforcement and justice aren't exactly always fair here.  In Korea...well what could I do, it's technically against the law for me to intervene.

I don't really feel that way.  I am compelled to intervene whether in Qatar or elsewhere.  I'll take my chances.   Horrified it is not considered assault in Korea.  Very sorry to hear that someone was deported for trying to help another.

It can be a hard choice to involve yourself in an instance of domestic abuse.  I used to witness it fairly frequently in Korea, the first time was on the subway, and older man slapped his wife while I was sitting down from them in the subway car, everyone on the train ignored it and I was just new to Korea, only 23 years old and didn't know what to do, or even what to say as I didn't speak Korean.   A few weeks later a friend of mine was deported for stopping a man from beating his wife on the street .  Turns out beating your wife is legal in Korea, and it was my friend who was guilty of "assault" for grabbing the man to stop him.  From that point on myself and everyone I knew turned a blind eye, if the people find it acceptable, it's not our place as expats to stop them from living the life they choose.

I'm pretty fearless that way.  Can't stand to see that sort of thing.  When I was in New York last I saw a man and a woman arguing violently.  He was really bullying her.  I approached her and persuaded her to come with me to safety much to the man's protestations.

There is no excuse for physical abuse.  Ever.  I'm very sorry to hear a woman was being hit.  If I had seen that I would have jumped right in and helped the woman.

No offence Spicemom, I know not everyone will do that.
