'Corpse' wakes up in morgue

Attendants fled a morgue fearing they'd seen a ghost after a man thought to have died woke up screaming.

=============================================================

A 50-year-old South African man thought to be dead woke up in a chilly morgue on Sunday and shouted to be let out, scaring off two attendants who thought he was a ghost, local media reported.

"His family thought he had died," health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo told the Sapa news agency.

"The family called a private undertaker who took what they thought was a dead body to the morgue, but the man woke up inside the morgue on Sunday at 5:00 pm and screamed, demanding to be taken out of the cold place."

This caused two mortuary attendants on duty to flee the building in the small town of Libode in the rural Eastern Cape as they thought it was a ghost.

After calling for help and returning to find the man alive, an ambulance was sent to fetch the man who had "been exposed to extreme cold for nearly 24 hours" said Kupelo.

He said the public should not assume that a sick person had died and contact a mortuary, the report said.

"Doctors, emergency workers and the police are the only people who have a right to examine the patients and determine if they are dead or not."

When I a nurse in a nursing home (uk) I sat with a patient until she died,she was certified dead by the duty doctor. The undertakers weren't able to come for a few hours,but when they did,the body was still warm. As they began to move her,a very weak pulse returned and she slowly regained conciousness.....that was VERY spooky! She lived for 2 more days!

SS, i think it is the way its been prepared that can be dangerous. Not sure the exact details but in China or Japan, certain puffer fish is actually a delicacy in sushi bars. But some species are deadly. So yes you would "look" dead if you ate it in moderation, but if you ate alot you would certainly be "really" dead. :)

gore, i've heard about that "puffer fish" thing...what if u eat puffer fish without your knowing..you'll be "dead" even if you're not..lol

In SA we have alot of traditional healers that sometimes concoct some strange medicines, maybe this old man took something that put him too sleep so deeply that it looked like he was dead. Similar to the effects of a certain puffer fish i believe, that slows your heart rate down so much even a trained proffesional will think you are dead. But i agree a medical proffesional should have atleast checked this guy out.

What's worrying is that the family "assumed" that he was dead and called an undertaker rather than a medic.

To make matters worse, the undertaker took the body without confirming death with a medic :O(

On the same note, read this news while reading online edition of one of my city local newspaper  ....a dog while crossing the road was hit by a rickshaw...his left rear leg seemed to be broken as it was seen limping after the incident and also seemed to be in some sort of pain as the reporter could make out from its facial expressions...however, before the medical help arrived the said dog and the rickshaw driver both vanished from the site. Police  is  on the lookout for both. News will be updated as the story unfolds.
