Connecting to the internet on Ubuntu(8.04)
Hey,
I have ordered a CD(Ubuntu - Linux) and it successfully arrived, no problems. Now, my problem here is: I live in Qatar, and since Q-tel doesn't have the drivers for the DSL modem(for people who run on Linux), where it allows you to connect to the internet, I really do appreciate your answer on telling me how to get Ubuntu connecting to the internet with no problems??
I am more than sure that the majority of Linux users have routers/wireless, but please do advice me on how can I get it to work on one of those DSL modems(speedtouch 330 - THOMSON)?
Yes, to answer any questions, I did search the internet and asked on Ubuntu's IRC channels and forums, but I had no luck at all.
Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Remember, for *DSL modem*, not anything else :)
Hello there friends.
Please post the steps you have used to solve the issue of using a Speedtouch to connect here in Qatar. Somebody else may need it one day.
Also if possible. anyone installed the Qtel gsm modem onto Ubuntu?
I use ubuntu Hardy Heron on my systems here in Qatar.
I have both modems, though I currently connect on a router.
Thanks for the help.
Burnout.
Beware! :)
Never mind guys, I have the problem solved!!
I'm going to go teach those Q-tel tech support how to do it.
sorry [unknown name]....but your username is: anahmed, which means: I'm Ahmad.
Thanks for all the above discussion guys....just wanted to explain one thing over here thats more important than any modem installation....that is...
i am FEMALE...and logically being female ...i would prefer being referred to as "SHE" rather than HE.

Yazan, what he said was: the site mentions that you can use the adsl modem on linux, now the software is obviously on the cd, so run the cd on linux and install it from there. Installation method for it is given in the documents which u can get on the website that ahmad provided or on the cd itself.

Are you reading the same answers as I am?? Ahmad answered with a way that is used on Windows XP(option 1 etc.), and the CD(internet installing) cannot be used on Linux - It's Windows XP only.
Analyze where in his 'answer' he gave me some helpful stuff, please.
And I live very far from Doha, so yeah, ordering is just simpler.
and by the way u should have asked me for it, instead of ordering it wasting money and waiting for alot of days lol.

Hey there Ahmad, I just wanted to tell you that I've already went to that site from before, and I also did the same right now, and you aren't posting anything other than the obvious facts. Yes I do know my DSL modem's details, and I don't have to be told more than once :)
I need a way, that someone may have experienced from before, for connecting to the internet while running on Ubuntu. Keep in mind, having a DSL modem, not a router/wireless.
Thanks.
By the way, the steps you provided are for WINDOWS XP and not UBUNTU. I clearly asked for ways on Linux.
Believe me, I already called Q-TEL for such support, and once a guy asked for the spelling of the word!...
They couldn't provide any help except advising me to buy a router/wireless, or keep on searching the net - which I have been doing from the beginning of the year.
Please find the Thomson Speedtouch 330 details below:
FEATURES - ADSL connection to the Internet
- USB 1.1 connection to computer
- No external power adapter needed
- Software support for:
Windows 98, 98SE, 2000, ME and XP
Mac OS 8.6, 9 and X
Linux (it supports)
Check out the link:

And normally you can go for options
1, 1 and then option 4 (PPPoA 8.35 VCMUX) or 2 (PPPoE 8.35 LLC)
then follow the steps as Yes and Next accordingly.
Or else give a call on 111 and follow the instructions to reach Internet Section.
All the best (^_^)
