Careful Darling

Happened last week...

A man riding a public bus in Northwestern Pakistan handed a piece of paper to a group of three school girls. The paper, wrapped several times, apparently bore the cell phone  number of the man. It would appear that it was a stunt performed by the man in a bid to befriend the women and somehow bring them into contact.

The same day, in the evening, the man got a phone call, apparently from one of the girls. He was surprised to see that the caller was rather desperate to talk to him, and openly told him that she liked him and would want to meet him the next day. She further told that, since her family would be away for a wedding, he could just come straight to her house and the two could spend some quality time.

The man readily accepted the offer and early in the morning, next day, reached the specified place. Those who saw him enter the house described him a tall, rather handsome man, of average height, with something of a rich person about him, clad in snow-white shalwar kameez and a jet-black waiste coat and shoes to complement.

Upon entering the house, the man, loaded with tons of perfumes and every cosmetic he could lay his hands on, found something stupid to his surprise. He found that there was no woman there but a group of four burly men lying in wait. They spent no time to attack the man with punches, kickes, sticks and so forth. He would easily have been killed if it  were not for the neighbors who broke open the house upon hearing the commotion within. A man with bloodied head, face and clothes was taken out by the people and taken to his car.

People's reaction to the event was a mix of awe, terror, and fun.

What's a dacoit?

By Segmund• 22 Nov 2012 15:28

A friend of mine, who works for WHO in Pakistan, had the misfortune of being robbed. He told me the story and literally I had goose bumps and a hysterical laughter at the same time. According to him, he was on his way, along with one other colleague, a skinny doctor, to a far flung area to assess level of polio vaccination.

He said he was going in a Toyota Hilux and the driver was an old man sick with diabetes. At one point while they were passing through some woods, they were intercepted by dacoits. They suddenly jumped onto the roads armed with AK-47s and asked everyone in the car to come out. one of them sat in the car and immediately drove it way. The others took my friends and the other two people into the woods and tied their hands together with their arms around a tree. They were also blind folded.

My friend said that then one of them suggested that we be shot immediately. "Apparently he had pointed the gun at one of us while saying so. But the other one told them not to do so as they had already gotten the car and wasting bullets on them was pointless, it would be better to just do a body search instead. They took off our shoes first. Then they carried out a body search."

It was at this point that the funny thing happened. During the search a stupid, unexpected item was found on the skinny doctor: a condom. For some crazy reason, the man was carrying it in the front pocket of his qamees.

My friend went on, " The dacoit was furious and said, ' so you are carrying the sack (local term) when there is even no woman with you. You want it for what haan? Let me wear it and use it on all of you."

My friend said until that point, he had been really worried, worried for his life. But from this point on, the fear multiplied. Now, he was scared not only for his life, but his honor (a**) too." He said I started reciting ayatul kursi to avoid such a dreadful prospect of being tied up, blinded folded and raped. He said the he then thought that if he was approached with any raping intent, he would attempt to kick the assailant, and that would either lead to his being shot, or, after being subdued, raped with greater mercilessness.

Thank God, the man did not mean it and he did not do anything of that sort. :)

I have said it before and I say it again, legality of any action is determined by law prevailing in the land where the action has taken place. I remember standing in the Grand Central Station in New York in a queue for a train bound for Connecticut. A man who was standing before me was suddenly approached by a woman and the two after swinging their arms around each other, pressed their lips against each others'. The remained glued to each other, in the same pose, for quite almost half an hour. Do you think it was legal or illegaal, regardless of whether the couple was married or unmarried.

Imagine the same scene taking place at Al-fardan Bus Station near Doha Jadeed. Would it be legal or not. Would the duo possibly face any consequences?

I request all of you calling the shots to term the boy's treatment illegal to look at the matter in the proper perspective. Are you even aware that in the tribal areas, where this happened, there is even no police system? There is levy force whose writ is secondary to the local jirga. It is the local jarga, comprising the dignified elders of the area, whose word is supreme and can not be challenged by any court of law.

Are you aware of this guy who was arrested for role in the fake polio campaign that led to the killing of OBL. He was sentenced to prison for, I think, 25 years by local jirga, not by the regular courts, as the judicial system's jurisdiction does not extend to the tribal areas.

In these lawless lands, matters pertaining to honor, are usually dealt with by the people. The levies's job is usually nothing more than handling of the dead bodies, and attending sulha (reconciliation).

I remember a couple of years back a man was allegedly murdered by his wife and two daughters after, apparently, he raised objection to their illicit activities. He was drugged and strangled to death in sleep. A little son who witness the murder could not keep shut about it as he developed post traumatic stress and would cry and telling everyone that he sees his father being killed. After the local chemist confirmed that the wife did purchase a supply of sleeping pills that night, confirming the kid's account.

The matter was never taken to any court. The very same day one villager announced the pillage of the family's property and the execution of the wife and daughters. The women all succeeded in fleeing; however, their house was levelled to the ground within a couple of hours.

This is the justice system there. I am never saying it is right or wrong. I am only describing it.

In the perspective of this justice system, the boy should have not attempted to 'gain the attention' of the girls.

Hope that explains it a bit.

The men who beat the guy were criminals for taking the law into their hands. Even if the girls were underage, and the man thus a pedophile, then he should have been reported to the police. What he did was wrong and he deserved then a penalty but one that is legal and just. It's because of people like the beaters, ie people who take it upon themselves to play police, lawyer, judge and executioner, that we have crimes like revenge killings and honor killings today.

Good thing they do not live in the West, they would have died of trauma by now.....

Saw the thread right now,As u said Segmund,This man made a grave mistake by handing his number to people without their consents(specially to three school girls!).No wonder they involved their family!

Similiar incidents happen a lot in our place too!Sometimes the culprits are arrested othertimes not! Whatever is the case, the mental trauma for the

victims'(in this incident, nothing negative thank God)and their family is always in its zenith!

Qatar is lucky. Everyone here is safe. Girls can stroll past the darkest streets of its cities and no one can even dare do anything wrong. I just love Qatar for the fact that I can feel safe. It was not so much fun to keep your gun loaded under your garments every time you had to step out of the house in the dark, back home.

You never implied that I lied. You just said this: "i don't know anything about how true this all is..no source means no verification means no belief..the moment someone says something that they in turn heard from someone else, the veracity needs to be a prime concern.

I just told you to take it lightly. I just described an incident which happened and I came to know about it. Just for the heck of it. Again I am telling you, please take it lightly. It is just informal discussion going on here. Do not take it seriously.

Whats with you guys?

Fatimah alone is dealing with the matter as pure debate. And I am responding to her in the same way. We have a difference of opinion, but that does not mean she is not my sister any more. you are still explaining things to fatimah like you were on the bus when that happened..when you are in fact the third party in the chain of narration..

show me where i implied you were lying or that this did not happen and i will apologize..merely casting light on the fact that this is not a verified tale does not imply its a lie..in fact, i agreed that these sick and weird things do happen..considering how completely you misunderstood britexpat in a separate thread yesterday and how you miss my point so completely here, I now think your basic problem is comprehension of what you read, how the sentence you are reading relates to the one before or after it. 'Paranoia' it seems..the nerve!

your posts are for curiosity? about what? about how we would respond or what we thought of the story? well, in that case, you have made it a trial, us the judge and going by how you are debating with fatimah, yourself the attorney.

the kind of guy who would physically abuse women and only trying his luck? Either ways beating him up brutaly was wrong. Reporting him would have been better and the girls should have never taken the number.

woah..wait, I just re read the story and saw they were school girls..ok that's a whole new thing then.Thats certainly a crime too.How old was the guy? I still dont condone the brutality but support a more legal approach.

By Segmund• 20 Nov 2012 10:51
Segmund

So you are trying to say that the girls should have waited for him to approach physically, hug them or something, so only then they could complain? He gave the number without saying anything to them, and they were too scared to do anything, they did not even know what the piece of paper contained. I know in Sri Lanka it might be happening, even in other parts of Pakistan and the cities it can happen, and only rarely the harassers get a real beating, but in village where this incident took place, it was completely unacceptable. I think they guy must be made because if the girls had made an issue in public, he would certainly have been killed.

By Segmund• 20 Nov 2012 10:51

There is no plaintiff here. I aint no attorney. You aint nojudge. There is no trial in progress. There is no chance that any jury is going to be misguided by my posts. So take it easy dear. If you cant believe it, just reject and dismiss it as absurd and make no fuss about it.

As to your so called sources, do you know how many times, the big names like BBC and CNN have been issuing wrong statements? In their case, serious harm was done and sometimes the consequences were rather significant.

My posts are just for the sake of curiosity and no one is named in here. So why dont you try reining in your paranoia?

By FathimaH• 20 Nov 2012 10:43
FathimaH

The guy was no saint but the girls accepted the number! Tinks you know how it is Sri lanka, guys are always trying to give girls there numbers, and if you are not interested you dont take the note.he didnt touch them or assault them, just gave them the paper. Them taking it and then getting the guy beat up was unjust and the beaters were criminals for taking the law into there hands and beating him brutaly.

By mohdata• 20 Nov 2012 10:39

ok i don't know anything about how true this all is..no source means no verification means no belief..the moment someone says something that they in turn heard from someone else, the veracity needs to be a prime concern..but it all does sound sick to the core..not fit to marry because you were groped?..these weird instances do happen i'm sure in places that are still not with the program as it were..not being condescending when i say that, mind you

By Segmund• 20 Nov 2012 10:22

Guys this really happened. But this is nothing in the face of what else has actually happened also. Tinkerbell is perfectly right about it. Even an aunt of the girl gave a sound beating to one of the girls by telling her that she must have been sending out 'vibes' to get the man's attention in the first place. Can you just imagine that? Many times it has happened that a guy would just go and touch a girl while she is going to school or something, just touch her, as in hold her by the arm or something, and then he would run away. For this girl there are only two options then. Either get married to that sex offender or remain single for life. For the man too, there are too options. Either run away or face the prospect of death or marriage.

In another similar incident, one widow who was living alone was being molested by a man who used to come and stand in front of her house. The neighbors instead of stopping the offender blamed the poor widow. She thought of a bloody plan. She told the man to visit her at night. While they united in intimate union in the bed, the woman reached out for a butcher knife under her pillow and ran it across the man's package, completely severing the privates off his body.

Agree that had these ladies truly been harassed, then they should have complained to the cops. That's what any woman should do. Beating the guy up was wrong, though sadly I know many folks who have done the same!

Yeah pity about the pudding..what a criminal waste of food!

By Canadian Achilles• 20 Nov 2012 01:10

if this is true, which i'm sure had to have happened at one point in history, the guy deserved the beat down for being so over trusting.. and outright stupid.

but i don't blame him, it's almost as bad trying to meet women there as it is here :P

By Segmund• 19 Nov 2012 22:43

Legality of an action is determined by the law of the land where that action is carried out. In the place where it happened, nobody would have questioned even if this person had even been killed. Over there, some of the laws are too inhuman to be described, yet they are in place and they are held up with strong conviction.

I would think this man made a serious mistake by handing his number to people without their consent. The girls later told that they felt as if they had a very bad character as people kept on looking at them after the chit was handed to them.

Here in Qatar also I have seen harassment of women taking place. I saw one guy in a coffee shop the other day, he happens to be one of the employees there, he came and sat with one girl who was working at her computer, and asked her if he could have her number, the poor girl got so nervous, she started blushing, I was sitting at the next table and was able to down my anger as the harasser did not even stop and chased her right till the door, saying in his God-damned accent, "you are beautiful madam".

There is nothing wrong if someone is consentually accepting or giving out a phone number. Or for that matter, if someone talks to a stranger. However, it is never polite, in fact, criminal to assault someone's privacy like that.

The genuine course of action in this case would have been for the girls to give the number to police and let them do their work. However, in that culture, it is highly ignoble for a woman's name to be implicated in anything---whether good or bad--- related to the police.

I feel sorry for the pudding, that he had brought with him, for his paramour. On the phone, it was another man, who faked a feminine voice, and demanded of the man to bring rice pudding for her ( I mean him). The bowl that he was carrying the pudding in was the first casualty of the assault made upon him.

[By the way, I did not witness this scene, first hand, but was told and retold this story, which is the buzz of the village these days].
