A person can be a Muslim and an extremist...A person can be a Muslim and not a Salafi. We cannot make takfeer as to who is Muslim and who is not but a Salafi is different. Not all Muslims will follow the Prophet in both creed and actions. A Salafi is one who does. I know what you mean bdw, and I'm not arguing with you here too but it truly upsets me when a person even remotely connects such atrocities to Salfiya even for the lack of a better term.

Hence a person is either a "Salafi" or an "extremist" I believe the word you are looking for is "Salafist" this is a term used to describe an extremist who wrongly believes his beliefs and methods are in accordance to the Quran and Sunnah.
