Boyzone fame Stephen Gately choked to death!

Oct.12,2009

Tragic Boyzone star Stephen Gately choked to death on his vomit, sources close to the police investigation said last night.

Stephen, 33, was found dead in his pyjamas by partner Andy Cowles at their £1million Majorcan holiday home. A post mortem will be held tomorrow and a Spanish judge will begin an investigation but insiders unofficially confirmed the cause of the tragedy.

Stephen was discovered kneeling against a sofa with his face buried in a pillow. A friend of the Gately family said: "They have been told the most likely scenario is Stephen had a bit too much to drink, vomited in his sleep and choked. It was a terrible accident."

Stephen died hours after he and Andy enjoyed a night of partying at a well-known gay club in Palma called The Black Cat Disco.

A clubgoer said: "Stephen was there with Andrew when I arrived at 3am and they were still there when I left at around 5.45.

"They weren't off their faces but they were drinking. They weren't being rowdy - they were just two lads on a night out.

"Andrew was dancing and Stephen was jigging around. People went up and chatted to them but it was all very low-key."

Police sources said Stephen and Andy met a Bulgarian man called Giorgio at the club and invited him to their apartment near the millionaires' playground of Andratx. The police are anxious to talk to Giorgio. But they do not believe he was involved in any way in Stephen's death, which they are treating as "non-suspicious".

A spokesman for Stephen's family in his native Ireland said his death was "a tragic accident".

Leading Dublin lawyer Gerald Kean insisted: "There is nothing untoward. There's no foul play involved and it's not suicide.

"It's just a tragic accident is what we've been told and we're happy that is correct information.

"It's not drugs, we don't believe, it's not suicide, it's not murder, it's not a fight. " Mr Kean added: "The family are devastated and have asked me to take calls for the moment. They're trying to come to terms with it."

Stephen's grieving bandmates, Ronan Keating,Shane Lynch,Keith Duffy and Mikey Graham, landed in Majorca last night. They looked ashen-faced and wore dark glasses asthey arrived at the airport.

The stars were driven to Stephen'sapartment in a Mercedes people carrier and went inside through an underground car park without making any comment.

The boys stayed in the flat for an hour. Friends said they wanted to go to Majorca to be with Andy and support Stephen's family.

Boyzone's manager, X Factor judge Louis Walsh, pulled out of last night's live final of the show and was also heading for the island.

Before he left, he said Andy was "in pieces".

Louis's fellow judges did the show without him. Simon Cowell said Stephen's death was "really, really tragic" and sent his condolences to the Gately family but added: "The show must go on."

Hours before he died, Stephen texted Ronan to say he was "so excited" about Boyzone's forthcoming new album. Ronan was in Chicago to run a marathon when he was told of the tragedy and immediately headed back to the UK. He said: "I'm absolutely devastated. I can't believe it's real.

"Stephen was loved by every one of us. He was one of the most caring, compassionate an gentle people I'veever known."

Mikey added: "Words just fail me right now.

"Stephen wasn't just a friend to us, he was a brother. We've lost a brother.

"The last time I spoke to Stephen he was in terrific spirits. He was excited about the future and on top of the world.

"We're all trying to pull together to see what to do from here."

Andy ran to a neighbour's home for help after finding Stephen's body and police were called.

Officers arrived to find the neighbour comforting Andy, who was "beside himself with grief".

An investigator on the case said: "Stephen was in a strange position. He was squatting - almost in a praying position.

"There were no signs o f violence or evidence or suicide or any obvious evidence pointing to another probable cause of death, such as the use of drugs."

Stephen last appeared in public at the Daily Mirror'sPride of Britain Awards in London on Monday.

A fellow guest said: "He was on fantastic form.

"Louis Walsh was at the next table. Stephen was teasing him mercilessly about the plastic surgery he'd had done on his eyes and Louis was telling him he needed Botox.

"Stephen was saying he was the happiest he had ever been, both professionally and personally."

Louis,57,said: "We are all utterly devastated. Stephen was one in a million. He was the most grateful person, humble and modest.

"I got my first big break with Boyzone and the boys mean so much to me. I had the best fun with Stephen at the Pride of Britain.

"I can't believe he is gone. He was so happy, in such a good place.

"I have spoken to Andy and he is shell-shocked."

Today is a bank holiday in Spain, so the post mortem on Stephen will not be conducted until tomorrow .

His body has been taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Palma, where the examination will be carried out.

An official at the Institute said: "Nothing will happen until tomorrow. Relatives will be asked to formally identify Stephen's body on Tuesday but that will not happen until the autopsy has been completed."

An investigating judge will be assigned to the case, as is normal in Spain. The judge will interview Andy and ask Stephen's relatives about his medical history.

Andy was being comforted by friends yesterday at the death flat, which sits above a spectacular bay called Cala Llamp, near Port Andratx. All the windows at the property were shuttered.

Two young women answered the door. Both looked as if they had been crying.

One of them said: "Andrew is not ready to talk. I think it's too early for him to talk. He will probably put out a statement later through Stephen's management company."

Wellwishers left flowers outside the flat. One, a woman from Wales called Sue, said: "I never met Stephen but I was a huge fan. He seemed a lovely, genuine person."

Stephen wed Andy in Las Vegas in 2003 and the couple held a formalcivil partnership ceremony in London in 2006.

It's understood they bought the Andratx flat less than a year ago.

Awaitress at a nearby beach bar, The Gran Folies Beach Club, said: "Stephen and Andy were regulars here over the summer.

"They were very polite. We knew Stephen was a singer but he was very modest.

"They would often come here for a beer or two but I wouldn't say they wereheavy drinkers."

Stephen is survived by his parents Martin and Margaret, sisterMichelle and brothers Tony, Alan and Mark.

His dad suffered severe head injuries a few years ago when he fell off a ladder while painting and he now lives with Margaret in a retirement home in the family's home city of Dublin.

Sources said Stephen flew home a few weeks ago and took Margaret out to dinner to celebrate her 60th birthday.

The star had been writing a children's fantasy novel, The Tree of Seasons, for the past three years, and was working on it at the time of his death.

His last message to fans, posted on his Twitter site on October 6, was: "Still busy, lots going on.

"Focusing on finishing my book next so may be quiet here."

Fans were gathering last night to lay flowers outside Stephen and Andy's £1.6million London home.

britexpat, unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence. Drinking to the point of passing out can result in aspiration and death. We often see this on college campuses and at holiday resorts. Binge drinking can be deadly!

it's true ronan was the face of boyzone...but stephen was second in line coz unlike keith, mikey and shane, stephen was made one of the main singers alongside ronan.he DID have an identity but like somebody mentioned earlier,it was under the shadow of the bad as a whole...he was thrust into the limelight after his being gay came out into the open causing the band's popularity to hurtle downwards and people began to blame Gately for being the root cause.

Hmmm labda its pretty hard to upset me esp if you want to have a 'discussion' and not come flying out saying show some respect to the dead famous singer. His level of fame has everything to do with it being posted on QL in the first place...tell a majority of the people around Stephen Gately is dead and they will be like Who? His fame is associated with Boyzone and nothing more.
