Boycott Garden restaurant

Garden Restaurant is famous for its tasty, clean and hygeinic Indian food.

But the manner in which the business is run is far from being clean. In fact its illegal.

The owners hire poor Nepali and Sri Lankan workers at measely salaries of around Qr 700. The workers, at the time of appointment are promised one months salary for every year of service put in, as gratuity, payable when they quit.

But the gratuity is never paid. There have been half a dozen cases in recent months when a worker decided to return home and the owners refused to pay him the gratuity.

They are denied the gratuity on flimsy grounds. The owners bring up trivial charges against the workers who are quitting - ranging from flies in served dishes to being impolite to customers - and then terminate their services. After being terminated, the workers are told they are no more entitled to gratuity.

This I find is horrendous, illegal and immoral. A poor worker is being robbed further.

The workers can hardly fight back.

Cant we do something about this blatant exploitation?

Lets begin by boycotting Garden. Lets not go there. Lets not help such exploitative owners get richer. Lets show solidarity with the workers.

Let the people know what's behind this restaurant anyway. When the media hear of it, the inquiry begins, and that will help open the case.

I advise these people incharge of these restaurant not to make promises to these poor people, isn't it enough that they hold on to the edge of a knife for a little salary???

Quite honestly I enjoy to go to the Garden now and again and like you I don't think that a boycott will do any good in this case.

I like the ambience at the 'Garden Hyderabadi Restaurant', Le Mirage at Mushrieb. Don't you feel it will affect the lowly paid workers adversely if you quit eating at these restaurants. They will loose their jobs. So as Canarybird highlights, 'someone should represent their case', if they genuinely want to help.

It's not only at Garden Rest. its all over qatar.

It's always the small things that make big differences.

Most of these people stem from simple homes and perhaps can't even read and write someone has to represent their case there - so please tell me who will do that?? Do you think some poor labourer will (in view of loosing his job) go to the Human Rights Committee - I don't think so.

I would be glad to boycott any company that does not pay gratuity to its eligible employees...

but how can I be sure that what you are saying is accurate?

What if you are just an angry competitor? ;-)

This is not new in this part of the world.......every other private companies are doing the same.

You could have suggested them to approach their embassies and get the entitlments and go back to their countries and find some better job.

Which one are you referring to now.

There are two of them in the same vicinity.

Could you care to clarify.
