Be Safe this Ramadan!!!!

Gypsy
By Gypsy

While I know the purpose of this month is fasting I just wanted to put out a reminder for everyone fasting or not. The temperatures right now are routinely in the mid to high 40's and some days into the 50's (with the humidity) SO PLEASE, if you experience any of these symptoms DRINK WATER!!!!!

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:
-Prickly heat (skin rash)
-Muscle cramps
-Tiredness and severe headache
-Dizziness and confusion
-Difficulty in breathing
-Heavy Sweating
-Rapid heart beat/breathing
-Intense thirst
-vomiting
-fainting

Symptoms of Heat Stroke (which if ignored can lead to coma and death)
-No sweating and hot red skin
-Rapid pulse
-Difficulty breathing
-vomiting
-confusion
-coma

Seriously everyone, I just had a grim reminder of the effects of not drinking enough water and getting overheated, so don't let this Ramadan be your last!

i think I am going to make that line my new signature... I seem to say it a lot these days....

This was intented as a thread to inform people about the dangers of fasting and a hot summer - if you will all remember this is technically the first mid summer fast in how many years? Probably most teenagers and young adults wouldn't have experienced a summer fast.

Gypsy, as I understand it, lost someone from her team due to them not taking care of themselves while fasting... but instead of you "I see religious bashing" people thanking her for the information - no, instead you all start to see "ghosts" of religious threads past...

Get over yourselves, the lot of you...

Appart from the Labourers who have access (or should have) to water and shade during the hot months in the middleast. The rest of people work less during Ramdan and most of the public office's are open in the evening.

The other main group of people who could be affected by dehydration in hot climates are the expats in the watering holes of Qatar. Since most of the watering holes are shut during Ramadan so i guess there are Safe too during Ramadan. So the only drinking they will do now will be in the safe surroundings of their home.

By QatariLady• 29 Aug 2009 14:03
QatariLady

In case you haven't noticed, MissX, the posts moved from advice to almost bashing the ritual of fasting.

And carbonated drinks aren't an adequate substitute for water, as they cause more dehydration, especially if they contain caffeine.

By MissX• 29 Aug 2009 12:43
MissX

The whole point of this thread QL, was to advise the people to not force themselves to fast if they are very dehydrated so they don't "commit suicide".

And carbonated drinks are an adequate substitute if nothing else is available.

By QatariLady• 29 Aug 2009 11:53
QatariLady

If they died for insisting on fasting when they didn't have to, either for poor health or for harsh work conditions, then they committed suicide!

Allah doesn't want ppl to torture themselves that's why there are always exceptions and exemptions.

Besides, people do die for heat strokes even without fasting. Like I'm not a troll said, ppl should drink water not carbonated drinks.

Please, Gypsy, advise your fellow westerners to stop flooding the world with artificial drinks and junk food if you want to make the world a better place to live :)

It is there in today's GT...

Carbonated drinks and sweetened beverages should not replace water while breaking fast as these drinks contain no nutritional value except calories, a dietician warned.

“Nothing should replace water which contains no calories. As our body comprises up to 73% water, we must give it the right amount of up to 1.2-two litres per day,” Nutrition and Diet Centre chief dietician Maya Hage Ali explained.

She pointed out that carbonated beverages were being consumed a lot during Ramadan. These beverages should only be taken in moderation and not necessarily

on a daily basis, she added.

“If one has to take some drinks other than water, opt for fresh non-acidic juices such as apple juice, preferably prepared at home. One should also try to avoid drinks high in caffeine such as tea and coffee as it causes dehydration. If you must have them, it should not contain lots of sugar,” she stressed.

“Usually, we fast eight to 10 hours and for those who do not eat Suhoor, it exceeds 12 hours. Normally the body will suffer a little dehydration, aggravated by the hot weather and our active lifestyle during the day. We might be tempted to drink huge amounts of water,” she said.

Ali emphasised that time and order of eating, as well as quality and quantity of food were of utmost importance.

“The timing and order of eating are important because our stomach has not been active for up to 12 hours. We must therefore take care and eat and drink in small quantities and as slowly as possible. To avoid constipation huge quantities of food must not be consumed,” she said.

At Iftar, a glass of water and three pieces of dates should be the first meal, Ali said.

“Dates are recommended as it has high sugar content which our body loses during the day. Dates will help replenish the lost energy,” Ali said emphasising that this too must be consumed in moderation.

“We can also opt for vegetables and lentil soups but should decrease fat in creaming as it contains a large number of calories,” she added.

Ali stressed it was important to take a break before eating the main meal adding that a fasting person’s body needs up to 12–20 minutes to adjust.

“When we start the main course, it is better to start with the salad, which is high in fibre and doesn’t contain sugar. It also helps prevent constipation,” Ali explained.

“Salad is one of the important dishes that should be on our iftar table on a daily basis. One must also consume fresh vegetables like lettuce, cucumber and carrots as they are rich in vitamins and minerals,” she suggested adding that olive oil should be used in dressing instead of mayonnaise and other creams that are high in sodium.

Ali added that foods rich in protein, carbohydrates and with little fat must form the diet during Ramadan.

“Our Iftar meal should constitute fish rich in omega three, red meat – to be consumed two to three times per week - lean cuts. White meat like chicken or fish are also good and can be eaten two to three times per week,” she said.

Ideally food should be boiled or steamed instead of fried in order to retain it

nutritious value, she said.

“When fasting, glycogen, which is the source of energy in our body, tends to get depleted. When we eat carbohydrates, they re-energise our muscles.”

According to Ali, carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, whole wheat or brown bread and pasta make for good food.

Fruits salad is also a welcome option apart from sweets, which has become common desserts, she said.

“Sweets are synonymous with Ramadan, so if we must eat sweets, we should avoid those high in sugar and fat. And we can chose to prepare them ourselves,” she said.

Suhoor should never be taken at midnight as practised by some, Ali said.

“Suhoor should ideally be taken early morning. That is the best time because it will at least give us a source of energy during the day, prevent headaches and increase our efficiency at work,” she said.

Ali recommended that Suhoor contains light snacks like a cup of milk and a couple of salads as well as fruits like dates.

“While one can consume dairy products such as yogurt or milk at Iftar and Suhoor, we should opt for low-fat varieties as they are already high in calcium and protein,” she said.

The dietician stressed that an individual’s active lifestyle, daily exercising and adequate sleep should not be affected by the fasting.

“Nearly 60%-70% of our energy expenditure comes from our daily activities, while regular exercises contribute between 20%-40%. We should also get between seven–eight hours of sleep daily,” she added.
