Australian bushfires - over 175 dead..

Wildfires are raging in Ausytralia and scores have lost their lives.

What I find appalling is that police belive that many fires were started deliberately by arsonists..

My question : What sort of moron deliberately sets out to start a fire , knowing that it may lead to loss of human life ?

Ugh, I just read this article. Those poor poor people. :(

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/02/11/australia.bushfire/

They need to catch this person / people.

Great detail there Gypsy, I completely agree with you.

As for the victims, people in australia are raising money for the families who have lost someone. It by no means is enough or brings back the person they love however people are trying to provide some compensation.

I just wish there was more we could do.

Wow Gypsy that example is scary about the DJ.. I just hope that now one here thinks that I is an Alien...lol

Sorry Snowyowl, looks like I need to get my glasses checked.

Brit, well pyromania is a mental illness, as is sociopathy, it does not mean that the person is unaware of the law or unable to understand the law. So without a doubt they should be charged with the murders. Mental illness does not make someone incapable of breaking the law. Should the person receive psychiatric assessment in prison? Yes, definetly, at least so we can better recognize the signs and catch these people before they act.

The only time insanity EVER gets someone off of a crime is A) a crime of passion (and that just usually lowers the sentence from first degree murder to manslaughter) and B) if they honestly have no idea and are so out of touch with reality that they think what they are doing is right. An example would be a guy in Canada who shot and killed a radio DJ. He was utterly convinced that the DJ was an alien that was trying to take over the world and he thought he was saving the world when he shot and killed this guy and that he was doing nothing wrong (as the guy was alien, not human, therefore it wasn't murder).

It is nearly impossible to prove real insanity.

By Gypsy• 11 Feb 2009 09:37

Well I think if you COULD understand it, that would be pretty scary.

Let's assume that he/she is caught and they're assessed to be a "Pyromaniac"

What do we do then ? Do we put them into an assylum for assessment and rehabilitation ?

What happens to the rights of victims in this case ?

I just don't understand how someone can honestly want to do such a horrible thing. The dealth toll is worse than years before. These are the worst bush fires in australian history. It is horrible to think they were deliberately lit.

By Gypsy• 11 Feb 2009 09:18

That's for an arsonist in Phoneix Arizona, not Australia, but probably the same breed of crazy ya.

They can assess him/her soon if this is true

Of course this person has a mental imbalance. They're obviously serverly sociopathic. They should be locked up and kept away from society and stuided to find out ways to prevent this in the future.

By kate_n• 11 Feb 2009 09:07
kate_n

I am not giving up on the hope that they can be stopped and prevented but someone has to have some mental imbalance to want to cause such a devestating thing. Without the 'evil or cruel' thoughts and ideas in their head they would not have thought to do such a horrible thing.

just like murderers, rapists etc they all want to do something to cause trouble or harm others.

By Gypsy• 11 Feb 2009 08:58
Gypsy

Personally Brit I would rather call it mental illness. At least with mental illness we can explain why the guy did this, and possibly be more proactive in the future in diagnosing people with similar mental illnesses and preventing these things from happening again.

If you call it evil, then you're basically giving up and saying there was nothing you could have done or should do.

I have family who have lost their homes in Victoria. I am from Australia and unfortuntely bush fires are a constant problem, some natural others deliberate.

I only hope that the bastards get caught and thrown in jail for life. Kevin Rudd has stated they will be charged for mass murder.

I can not start to think what goes through the head of someone so stupid to deliberately light a fire during the peak of summer!!! Evil is the only word that can explain them.

I don't think it's often used to forgive criminal behaviour at all, actually it should probably be an excuse more often. After all an estimated 60% of death row prisoners in the US are certifiably criminally insane. Should they catch who started this fire the person who did it will get charged with the 175 + murders.

The only time anyone gets off on insanity is if they truley have no idea that they did anything wrong.

By britexpat• 10 Feb 2009 12:13

Let's leave Tom and especially John Travolta out of this.

Whilst i agree that mental illness exists, I percieve that we all too readily use it to "forgive" criminal behaviour.

Why because I believe in mental illnesses? Didn't realize you were friends with Tom Cruise Brit.

They are driven to set fires, that's why they're called pyromaniacs. However I should note that pyromaniacs only like to set fires, they don't get off on killing people, they get as much satisfaction from lighting a match as burning a house down.

Sad thing is that there is actually a name for these idiots - Pyromaniacs..

Now, the namby pamby, liberal, soya bean eating, amongst us will have us believe that they are "driven" to commit these acts..
