I am into Marine tanks as well, have previously owned one in my home country and plan on starting one soon in Qatar.

One of the stores on my list to visit is http://www.aquaart.com.qa/

The basics of marine tanks can not be discussed on QL because of the vast information and research required to start being a marine aquarist. There are dedicated sites and forums to address such issues.

Who says you cannot? You don't know it until you have tried it. I have kept Discus with my bala (tiger) sharks and they have grown just fine.

A breakwater is any large artificially created groyn that sticks out into the sea. Wilkipedia should be able to tell you. A harbouer wall is an example.

I would advise NOT buying stuff from aquariums here in Qatar. The coral is harvested illegally from Oman, Yemen etc. and for every fish they have alive about 50 died in the process of getting here. If you go snorkelling along breakwaters you can catch a good selection of fish, urchins, starfish etc. and retunr them after 1 or 2 weeks. If you have kids they will love this.

Wakkrah beach may be a good point to collect seawater, never taken from there. Don't go for inside the port. As mentioned above you can make it yourself but the local marine life probably wont survive.......

The Flowerhorn fish does not exist in the wild. It is a hybrid created in Malaysia during the last years of the 20th century. Exactly which species that were combined in order to form the Flowerhorn fish is still unknown, but it was several different South American cichlids. The secrecy has naturally been a good breeding ground for several rumours regarding the true ancestry of this remarkable fish, and some if the more bizarre theories claim that the first Flowerhorn fish was created in a secret Malaysian genetics laboratory where genes from the South American Trimac cichlid was artificially combined with genes from a Goldfish. More plausible theories suggest that the Flowerhorn fish is the result of selective crossings of several different South American cichlids; most likely intricate combinations of the Trimac cichlid, the Midas cichlid, the Redheaded cichlid and the Red Devil cichlid.

Flowerhorn cichlids can display striking patterns on their body, and these patterns will sometimes resembles letters, numbers and signs. This has made Flowerhorn cichlids extremely popular among followers of the ancient Asian Feng Shui tradition. South East Asia has a long tradition of keeping aquarium fish in order to bring luck and happiness to the home. The Arowana has for instance been kept for centuries since it resembles a Chinese dragon – a very strong symbol for harmony and happiness in Chinese mythology. The Flower horn does not look like a Chinese dragon, but it has still been embraced by the Feng Shui followers since it has a hump that makes it somewhat similar to the Chinese God of Longevity. The larger the hump, the more luck will be brought to the Flowerhorn fish keeper. The markings on the body also play a vital role when determining the monetary value of a Flowerhorn fish. Flowerhorn fish with markings that resemble attractive Chinese letters have been sold for enormous amounts of money. If a Flowerhorn fish features the Chinese sign for “Luck” it will immediately become extremely valuable. .

10 gallon Reef tank is also called nano tank. IT very difficult to keep. When it comes to reef aquarium the bigger the better as in a small tank if anything bad happens reaction time is less to rectify.

Cycling an aquarium naturally without adding some source of living nitrifying bacteria can take around 30 days or so, but there are ways to help speed-up the process and shorten this cycling time.

If you have not already decided on what livestock you want in your aquarium, take the time while you are waiting for the tank to cycle and plan out a species community.

NO water changes should be performed or ammonia destroying products of any kind be added WHILE THE TANK IS CYCLING, as this only delays and drags out the completion of the process.

Salt water :

Fill the aquarium with a prepared saltwater solution, or make it up inside the tank itself.

Tip: If you choose to make-up the saltwater in the aquarium, once it is mixed and ready for use, be sure to allow the solution settle out, and then siphon out any white residue that might be present on the bottom of the tank.

Start all the equipment, and let the system run for a day.

Step 1: Prepare the Aquarium

To get the aquarium ready:

Clean the tank with freshwater and a soft cloth or sponge.

Apply a background, if you plan to do so.

Put the stand into place and level it, being sure to leave clearance for electrical connections and equipment.

Set the tank in place with an underpad for cushioning underneath, and level the tank.

Prepare all the equipment to be used and install it.

Just take a little more patience, sort of like having a house full of orchids instead of rubber plants.

Get the necessary kit (not from this country)

UV lights

|Regular clean seawater supply - the corniche doesnt count!

Protein skimmer

Filters (big ones)

air pump and you r away.

I havent bought stuff from shops, just caught it myself and let go again after a few months, if it was not eaten by something else......

But i have packed it up now.

It's not so difficult provided regular maintenance is done. One thing is good here is we have pristine clean sea water.
