Accident at Museum R/A

This happened about an hour ago, you all probably know how this thing happened.
Just keep your distance from these container trucks especially at roundabouts.

Hey nomad

What camera have you got there? the pics came out splendid? Did you retouch? Any change in image sharpness?

By Rich• 8 Jun 2009 12:58

Roundabouts "should" be designed taking into the account of the following factors;

Type of predominant vehicle class

Whats known as super-elevation or degree of curvature including camber and driver comfort

Skid resistance (positive vs negative texture depth in mm)

Drainage

Speed limit on the approach and exit

Drivers view

adequatly singned exit points on and befre the roundabout.

To mention a few, however i would put it down to driver error including training, assessing speed limits and absolute no respect for the vehicle or people he may harm after the event of this very sorry state of affairs we face every day here in Qatar, kind regards R

diamond,

I don't reply to JackFrost... He's only here to take loads of money from the stupid locals.

It's as if the drivers of the trucks didn't notice they were driving A truck. I sometimes find myself going at 80kph in the same corniche road, then suddenly some truck drives past me!

Ooo Jackfrost, such venom. And of course, the obligatory sweeping generalisations.

'The Qatari's are minority in the country and they are still to blame for all the stupid things that happen.'

Like I said on another thread, predictable.

Jackfrost, not only the Toyota drivers are wreckless drivers. How about the Lambo's and Porsches and Hummers and other LARGE SUV's? You have no clue as to what you are talking about. I think you should have SOME self respect in order to respect others - but you seem to lack that, so it isn't your fault.

By anonymous• 8 Jun 2009 11:35

How many accidents do local Qataris cause here with there reckless driving. And it it the Toyota drivers with the large cars and small prick that cause these accidents with there arragent driving, when I drive into the city I can always see 2-3 arrogant Toyota local drivers harassing other drivers with there poor driving skill , so please don’t tell us that the bad drivers on our roads here The Qatari's are minority in the country and they are still to blame for all the stupid things that happen.,WELL HELLO yes.. if you cant see that open your eyes when you drive, you are just as arragent as the rest of your Toyota drivers. And yes I hope we meet on the road one day, them I could prove my point on how dad you Toyota drivers are…

oh wait, are you saying it is only me who states Toyota drives are a bunch of arrogant drives that should be taken off the road,,??

Power to the non believers, it’s a great feeling to have and hold.

Your comments are always so low as you are. You think local drivers are the only ones that cause such accidents. The Qatari's are minority in the country and they are still to blame for all the stupid things that happen. Have you no morals?

And yes I drive a Toyota, but a gold one, so watch it!

I'm really bothered by the anti-driver comments:

- The employer ultimately is responsible for maintenance and safety of the equipment. If the tires are bald, the brakes don't work and the truck a death trap, who's fault is that? No matter how slow you drive, something is going to happen.

- It's easy to say that the driver should bring forward safety concerns regarding the truck to the attention of the company. However, many of the drivers come to this country from a culture where the employee is subservient. Don't ask questions, just do as you are told. The drivers do have a responsibility to bring safety concerns forward, but ...

- many are so grateful for employment so they can send home cash to their families, are they going to risk that by antagonising their employer?

- The drivers probably had "professional" training here in Doha in order to get their license. With the need for labor, I'd be interested in the quality of the driver training itself.

- Safety training would help. But I think literacy and general education are also necessary so the training is understood and implemented. Why expect someone who has not driven a car, let alone a big truck, to understand all the intricacies of driving a big rig without help?

- I've heard my students on several occassions state that if labor don't like it here and don't like the conditions, etc, go home. For many of us, it is better here. Can it be better? Absolutely. But the type of change that will make a big difference in safety starts with the employer, not with the employee.

- I have to give credit to the authorities - there are improvements in safety and in enforcement. I'm sure in our own western home countries change was just as measured and incremental as it needs to be here.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame the driver. If you see the condition that some of these trucks are in, moldy tyres, bent suspension etc, it might have not been his fault, but the fault of the sheer lack of maintenance and care for the truck.

i was under impression the heavy trucks of such aint allowed inside the city during day time to avoid such mishaps!!!! they are allowed between 10pm and 6 am... I am not sure, but thats what i heard !!!!!..correct me if I am wrong. cheers.

these trucks are so scary when they pass by you especially when you are on the R/A.. it looks like they are gonna drive over you....and when its late night they really drive more than 120 speed...

By anonymous• 6 Jun 2009 21:01

Seems there is no time limit for trucks on doha road, especially in city roads. driving close to truck is too dangerous, while u are moving beside them small pebbles, stones too can hit your windscreen or damage your car paint, on the bonet and sides. I drive on the salwa road to abu naklah and many a times, while i pass thru these trucks small stones come and hit the car, many of my colleagues, got hit in their windscreen, it got smashed. The trucks move at a speed of 140, where the max limit for cars is 120.

Request to members, do not ever go drive pass thru these trucks, they are dangerous....

Mandi,

It happens all the time here, truck drivers drive worse than LC drivers that many fear.

Get a grip, how many times does a a truck of this size and weight fall over?

The man does not know how to drive at all.

He was a complete and utter dweeb.

He deserved that accident, I am really glad that nobody else was hurt. Hope he is sacked.

PMM, not his fault?! He was just driving along, minding his own business and his truck simply fell over? As I have reiterated, I have never seen a truck on its side in the US, jacknifed tractor-trailers yes, but trucks don't just tip over! In fact I lived in New York City for ten years and only saw one accident. I'm not saying they don't happen but I witness fender-benders (and worse) every day in Doha. If you say it was not his fault you absolve him of responsibility to be aware of his load, the traffic conditions and speed. It IS his responsibility! As foreign a concept as this may be, the driver of a vehicle is responsible for its safety and the safety of those around him/her.

we saw this happen as well. the truck went over in slow motion, actually fairly gracefully. It looks to us like he got cut off. At the least, i'd say that the shipping container was top heavy so that when he went around the corner, over he went. I'd guess it was not his fault. Thankfully, the driver was able to walk away, he looked unhurt when he came out of the cab. Lots of people stopped to lend a hand as well, way to go!!

The amount of times I have seen these huge trucks and lorries driving at high speeds, with no precaution at all. I try to avoid going near any trucks on a r/a. It's amazing how fast they drive, as if no concept of the size of the vehicle they are driving, how many trucks have to flip to realise they learn...

By nomad_08• 6 Jun 2009 14:42
nomad_08

its not the first time we have seen this kind of incident involving container trucks. on this R/A for instance, there are at least 3 similar accidents that ive seen in the past.

there are plenty of safety issues concerning these heavy vehicles and cynbob just mentioned some of them. and unless these issues are resolved, we will be witnessing more of these on the roads.

...we just have to be very careful and keep a safe distance from these trucks.

Is the truck loaded with the materials distributed equally?

What is the speed limit for these truck drivers?

Where's the common sense?
