i am thinking of buying abaya.. just want to make sure that wearing obaya by non-muslim white girl is not offensive for local people, or anything like that... any advise, buddies?
..by the way, where is that best place to buy obaya? since it will be my first one (and most probably the only), i want to have a really nice one...

i think the traditinal dress looks good because the locals know how to carry off these clothes.

even with the abbaya, one needs to know how to carry off the garment, else one can really look sloppy fidgeting with the shaylas and trying to manage the abbaya around them.quite sadly not all of my asian women compatriots know how to wear the abbaya, they wear it because they have to, so in most cases its just an additional garment over their clothes.

so wear it well.

bajesus......huh.....you lost me there.

The abaya with the Ghutra? Or maybe shielas with the thobe? I feel like making a statement!

I think the Arabic men, who wear the thobe and ghutra, look wonderful in their garments - truly delicious! Honestly! They look magnificent, don't you think so?

Oh but this thread was about the abaya - sowwee, went slightly off topic.

no worries wearing an abbaya... i do it from time to time.

esp if wearing sport clothes then popping to supermarket after.

i keep one in the car when i am going out in the evening...

just in case car breaks down/crashes and i can ensure i look 'respectable'

go down the souqs

for a posh one to the malls... good shop in The Mall

when we were for the first time in the Middle East. My hub had a thobe made for him, but in those days the whole WORLD came home from Middle East with a ghutra (spelling?)and wore it like a badge, whether as a shawl or a headscarf it was all the rage :o)

i think you are asking about 'abbaya'.

well to get exclusive one you can check out motahajjiba at any of the malls, or even try out the abbaya shops in teh inner allyes of citycentre.

ask them if they can alter it to fit you appropriately, not too lose like a sack and nor too tight that it loses its purpose of covering up.

alternatively, you can always go to the souq, specifically souq asiri or diera, where they sticth the abbayas to your kind of liking and you can select the material and design. it turns out cheaper.

the range is 250-1000+
