Arabian Business has released its 2009 Power 100 list of the World's Most Influential Arabs. Four people from Qatar had made this years list (and another one if you include the Director of Al Jazeera but he is listed under Palestine)

And the most powerful are....

No. 17 - Akbar Al Baker
The CEO of Qatar Airways is famed for his abrasive character, but it’s his business smarts that demand the most respect, as does his ever-increasing influence over the global aviation business.

No. 60 - Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned
The wife of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikha Mozah is a force to be reckoned with in her own right.

No. 65 - Ghanim Bin Saad Al Saad
A star of Qatar's real estate market, Al Saad's reputation and profile grew alongside his home state's property boom.

No. 99 - Jaber Al Harami
Now editor-in-chief of the Qatari paper Al Sharq, Jaber Al Harami learnt his trade at the University of Qatar.

See the whole list here.

I thought that the Arabs were really really wealthy. Then why is that Prince Alwaleed bin talel comes at No. 22 in the Forbes list with net worth of only 13.3 billion whereas there are many in the 3rd world countries with networth crossing 40 billion in year 2008. Although this year every body's networth has dropped considerably due to the recession.

"We considered Arabs from across the globe in all walks of life – business, media, entertainment, law, academia, arts, fashion, music – names from more than 20 different sectors were entered.

In line with our Power List policies, we do not consider any members of royal families, politicians or religious leaders. The main exception is Prince Alwaleed, who we believe has amassed his power and fortune through business acumen."

I can't believe that al-Baker and Sheikha Mozah are more influential than the Emir and the PM.

I do wonder why al-Baker is listed as having any global influence at all. Sure he orders mountains of aircraft (and has a massive advertising budget, which might have something to do with this report) but does running a transport business really give you any influence over world events? I think not.

I guess this list is just intended to massage the egos of people Arabian Business thinks it can get something out of (i.e. advertising from Qatar Airways and Qatar Foundation).

And maybe someone from Arabian Business wants a job at Al Sharq ;)

It's الحرمي and not الحرامي...(there's a big difference in a letter) in English both words are transliterated to al-harami

The name mentioned abouve is more like "hairami" but the "hair" portion is pronounced very fast and the "r" rolls. ____________________________________________________

It is pronounced and spelled completely different than the arabic word for "theif", hence no correlation. _____________________________________________________
