Religion Vs. Morals....

Religion vs. morals:

Who is the "better person"? the man who does something good simply because it seems like the right thing to do, or the man who does it because he is religious and doesn't want to go to hell? (or suffer other consequences)

THANKS FOR ALL the comments, suggestions, clarifications and all those reactions for this Thread.. I'm happy to hear from your side guys.. I hope and pray that each and everyone of us will be a role model in society not because we wanted to show to the people that we are good but because ,we wanted to live this World in Peace, Love and Harmony.... We must believe to ourselves that we can be a good preacher and a follower... Follow your faith..... Our faith makes us strong and our deeds makes us more human.....Whatever religion we have, One thing for sure.. God loves us All..

Hi Zhie. If you will read Matthew 17:27,

http://everything2.com/node/952041

The story was about a man who ask Jesus, as to what he should do to gain eternal life. Jesus told him to obey the commandments. Then the man told that he had obeyed since his youth.

But when Jesus told him one more thing, to sell his things and give to the poor, then he shall have treasure in heaven, then he should follow Jesus.

The guy got dissapointed and sad when he heard that and went away.

Matthew 19:24 "And again i say unto you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God"

This story can somehow tell us what is more important.

Following God's will is more important than doing/thinking only what is good.

If you do something ordinary good is consider moral. (like the guy do good things as to God's commandment).

But doing something extra-ordinary good for God's glory (like what Jesus told the man to sell his properties and give to the poor) will give you more blessings and even eternal life.

And n number of times better than Hindus.. as most of us pray only when need arises...

In Hinduism - Religious Rituals n Spiritual quest are treated as two different entities( interdependent but still separate )... Don know about Islam.... CBD???

The ''impression'' is true. The judgement is not the result of any propaganda rather from whats been and is happening in this world. I am sure I dont need to produce proof , do I?. Its all facts each and every one knows. We all are going throug the effects of it.

Arien,

that is an impression you have about religion which is not true at all!

My religion, Islam, instructs me not to kill innocent people and states that killing one single life is as worse as killing the whole people. Not only that, but promises a reward for helping living matters! not necessarily humans or muslims in particular.

It is just the wrong impression you have, thanks to propaganda maybe, that cause you to release such a judegment.

Some people do misuse religion, but this is not religion's problem. It is the problem of those decieved who, some of them, are not even bothered to find truth for themselves.

By Arien• 2 May 2009 15:18

CBD, Nope not at all a relevant comparison. Law and religion. Laws obviously restricts criminals, without law and order it would be a disaster

religion creates fanatics. They makes the life a disatser. World would have been much better without them.

i disagree here...religion is good and is effective..if others do not use it or respect it..then they are causing the problem not the religion..

very much like civil laws which is suppose to bring security and peace and yet many criminals ignore it. Should we stop law enforcement because of criminals?

we should promote the culture of law & religion which both are closely related. Law is an extension to religion.

One Thing I really feel bad about...

In a tussle between Religious n Devil/Politicians/Bas&*$ds

How can a religious person WIN??

The person shall be humble, ever forgiving, ever loving... He ll like you even if you hate him

Even if you make fun of him in public/humiliation

Even if you cheat him.... He shall forgive

And against.. a devil.. who cheats... steals,.. bribes... kills... how can the kind stand against him..

not tht the peace is weaker than War..

Thing is it is not bothered about the materialistic gains... which devil/evil fights for at any cost...

And even our reference of success is possession of these worldly materials...

But he should win against the evil..... I don like the helplessness he seems to be in

Arein -

As CBD has said religion is about the truth, instincts of a human....

And yes... Good ... BAd... true.. false... all are relative terms...

Good for a Hungry is to Eat Lots...

And for a over-weight is to eat less... (Example..)

But, religion is a way of life... not a bondage as we think... it was a guideline gifted to us.. By god... so tht we have a solid pillar to support us stand whenever we fall weak.. weakness could be anything.....

It ll result you to commit actions which somewhere inside you - you shall feel guilty about.....

= > Religion is very powerful....

Unlike science it has emotional attachment.. anyone can manipulate you with this weapon... SEE THE WORLD TODAY...

Religion is like a Very powerful and sharp Axe..

Its power can be used either way...

And Mind you... it is not religion for which we face problems..

IT IS TERRORISM.... not religion... it is people miss guided ... emotionally...

Only Solution I see to this is

1. Education.... unbiased..

2. Exposure to other civilizations... When you see someone else loves his lang as much you do yours... You understand there is no point in dieing to save it...

Or to love it in a fanatic way..

Ashwin..we agree that guidlines are internal..religion is just a reinforcement to internal traits we have.

beeseh,

religion is a guide given to humans by God through prophets. If you examine religions, you will see all of them support good values and condemns injustices and killing the innocent. No religion is required to let us agree on those values.. So religion indeed is compatible with our instincts. it is just a formualted tool sent to us by God to organise our lives. Religion also help in every aspect of life where visibility is not clear too.

By beeseh• 2 May 2009 11:39
beeseh

Curious, can you pls define "religion"?

Not every grown up person can tell right from wrong, the same applies for children though the reasons are different. Anyway, what is right and what is wrong? Who gave us this definition? Right is what is considered to be right by the majority of society.

I somehow believe we are born as a ready product with all the main personality traits. Psychologists say in the first 3 years you can actually for the character of your child but I somehow have doubts about it. I'd say you can only strengthen what is already inside your child. You can't sow weed and expect to harvest wheat...

Arien, I agree that nothing can make us good or bad. And I also think there is no good or bad person, we're all a mix of emotions and decisions, good ones and bad ones.

CBD - I would partially agree with you. It is yes when you say - Religion is not understood by us in totallity.

And I disagree or have different point of view - when you the laws mentioned in religion are external...

I strongly feel the guidelines ("laws" sounds strict) given in religion come from inside... tht is true nature of every human being...

But it is often clouded by the -

1. Falling pray to the sensual (5 sense organs) needs and desires.

2. And committing actions for short term benefits, assuming we shall not have to pay for it...

Sidh, if as a person you can't tell right from wrong no religion of this world will make you a better person.

Arien, you're right but fear is never a good solution, it doesn't work for a long time. Sooner or later those who do good out of fear will fall back to their true self and that's gonna be hell then.

By CuriousButDetermined• 2 May 2009 11:05
CuriousButDetermined

beeseh,

i don't think we disagree if we look at it from all angles..

I think this is a confusing question and is hard to give a proper answer. The reason is that all of us do not understand what religion is. We always think of it as an external set of laws imposed on us, which is true but this is only one aspect of religion which is inherited in it.

On the other side, we have human instinct. Now, any grown up person can tell right from wrong even little children. How gave you that instinct?? who gave you that natural tendency?? ANSWER IS: GOD gave you the instinct.

Now, who gave you religion? Answer is: God gave you religion.

so it is basically the same.

Dance, I agree with you, moral comes first. We learn it as little children, our parents teach us to tell wrong from right. But after that it's up to us if we make the right choice. And this is the point where I can't really agree with you Curious. For me if somebody does the right thing because he knows it's the right thing is more worth than doing it because somebody else told you so. A really good person follows the 10 commandments without ever having heard of it.

The better, make it the balance between moral and religious deeds. Moral without religion is a directionless, likewise religion without moral is decay. The moral value a man must possesses to be accepted in general society . Religious value goes as civic guideline as individual preferences. In short both makes a better person

If I have understood the forum text correctly....

The former is the person who is doing it because he likes to.

And the later.. (I would not say religious here) does it out of fear.. doesn't want to see himself in a place where he might get into if e doesn't do so...

If you are helping to make this world a better place to leave... irrespective of the motive behind it .. it is good...

And when we talk about a person who wants to help because he feels like - I would not be surprised to see majority number in this category shall be religious guyz...

And people who do out of fear of Hell - Shall be either guyz who do not believe much in religion but still jus to keep themselves safe from hell shall do the act..... (you know jus in case god exists.. I should be safe types..)

Or the religious who are on self-realization journey and still have limited exposure to true essence of religion.

The extreme ends of anything always look similar if not looked deeply.

A child is innocent, so is a 70 yrs +

The former is so, because he is not aware about the ego (He is unaware)... And the later bcoz he has seen many things and understood ego is not worth the life... and innocence is bliss (He has realized)... If you look from out side.. both would look similar..

But are extreme ends of a mans life....

Dear Friends

Moral Come 1st even when you are a kid & don`t know about religion, then religion come to stop you when you are a man from treating other the same way so religion is the top of all Morals & it helps also to keep us all away from our own judgment which deffer according to experience or else, so it give us all the same rights & create equality in everything.

this is a tough question..and i don't think there is a wrong answer..

the former should be appreciated for humanity and doing the right thing..the other guy is good follower of religion and also conducts a good behaviour..

so from our point of view, both are good because we measure them on thier act..if someone does you a favour..it does not matter whether they do it because it is the right thing to do or whether they are doing it for religious beliefs as long as it is a good thing they are doing.
