I got married in Canada in a civil court with my husband in Canada, and I want to join my husband who resides now in Qatar and live with him there. Would it be okay for me to get my marriage certificate stamped by the embassy of Canada and authenticated and live with my husband in piece without any any problems in Qatar? we are both mulims,,,,, Is a civil marriage certificate enough to live there with him?

I know, i am pretty sure that I wont have any problem since I am legally married to my husband, its just that feeling i have at the back of my head thats scaring me, i just dont want anything to happen when i go there. Especially cuz me and my hsuband were actually married here in civil court downtown in city hall, and we both love each other very much, and it was a love marriage and at the time my parents didnt approve and they are still against him, i dont want my parents coming down here and causing problems for us or his family....

On the other other hand I dont know WHY the police said that to me at the time when i was in Doha.... why would the police mis-guide me at that time? I mean i had to come back here to Canada just because of them. I could have stayed there and gotten my marriage stamped by both embassies and could have lived with my husband than which was about 6 months ago exactly today...... I mean there's a alot of misguiding due to the part of the law and police there. If anyone has any problem, they should not ask the police there and i would advice them to see a lawyer... The Sharia law and Civil law are really confusing there i guess...

Sunshine Christians dont have nikkahs, and a nikkah is not possible to all muslims who marry out of an islamic country. A majority of muslim marriages in the west are civil.

Yes I am a Canadian citizen... there is more the story, the captain did mention that i had to have a nikkah (get married religiously) eventhough i had a VALID MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. Does that mean that i cant live in Qatar with my husband unless I am married religiously?

This is the 2nd thread with the same title from the same person...i don't know why you have to create different threads. http://www.qatarliving.com/node/212353

If it's legal...then there is no problem. What is the difference, with regards to document is concerned, between civil wedding and church/religious wedding? I was married in the embassy, which is considered civil, and never had any problem. Are you canadian or not? don't misunderstood my question because i have never heard of anyone being questioned about the marriage certificate that is stamped by the embassy.

It's not because things are difficult that we don't dare, it's because we don't dare that makes things difficult!

Sunshine, there are hundreds of thousands of expats here, married with all sorts of certificates... I am not sure why you think you would have issue. If your marriage is valid then you are all set but as was said before, seems there may be more to the story??

Good morning Sunshine, you're up early! As am I. I'm sorry to say that I don't think your in-laws can sponsor you. But it's worth checking out. However, I'm sure you can find a job. One thing you may need to keep in mind is that you will need to have a certain income from that job in order to sponsor your husband. Again, I'm not sure, but it may be something like over 4000QR/month.

yeah well my husband is 30, going on 31 soon lol, im 22 on the other hand, i guess his parents cant sponsor him cuz of his age, I am sure it does play an important role.... cuz he is probably over the age limit, but thanks though, can his parents sponsor me?

I'm on shaky ground here, but I believe I've heard that there is an age limit for parents sponsoring an adult male child and I just don't know what that is. 18? 21? I am also under the impression that the age limit is different for girls.

yes it is a good idea,,, my husband is actually in the process of finding a job there.... My in-laws work there but i am not too sure if his parents can sponsor him? would that be possible, i mean they've been there for more than 30 years....

I think your idea about getting a job is a good one. Then you can sponsor your husband. Alternatively your husband can apply for a job, or is he a student?

As has been said, if you have a valid marriage certificate from the appropriate Canadian authority then that is all you need. Is there more to this question? Please be aware that if you are to live with your husband in Qatar for any period of time you will have to obtain a residency permit under his sponsorship. Tourist visas run out after a month or two. By the way, my marriage certificate was accepted in Qatar by my husband's employer with just the raised seal, I didn't need any authentication. In the US, our marriage licenses and certificates are issued by the civil authorities, only the venue shows if the marriage was "religious."

so i can live with my husband right? with a civil marriage certificate? If it stamped and authenticated by the embassy of Qatar and the embassy of Canada? which is in Kuwait. I have written to the embassy of Qatar for Canada which is based in Kuwait, and they have given me the procedure to authenticate my marriage certificate, which involves me getting it stamped by both embassies in both contries. This is not for the purpose of obtaining a visa or sponsorship, I am just asking for living with my husband cuz i dont want to get into any problems there. I want to know if the government will accept my civil marriage which took place in Canada and yes it was sanctioned by the government.

if it is a legitimate marriage sanctioned by the government, you really need that documents for filing a visa with concerned embassy.
