Nomerci...people think that their own religious set of beliefs are absolutely true, where science is still evolving, and eventualy science will prove what religion says.... we are just error prone humans who believe in what we want to believe and religion is something absolute, science is not.

whereas Science is practical and global, religion is not.

And nomerci i think, the day you are referring to will be the day of judgement(if you believe in it) otherwise, this conflict will never be over. Because religion is multiplying conflicts, science is not. :)

Tail Chopper, yes, I do think they helped, if not being wholly responsible for , the development of science.

Nowadays, well, we shall see.

There are people who know, maybe one day we shall see the whole picture.

Nomerci, I do agree with you.

But do you think that people who did understand the compatibility, helped science to progress in past??...or they are just proving it nowadays, where science is much simpler to understand and to relate with generalized statements of holy scriptures.

This has been ordained in my faith as an answer to come to a compromise so as to move forward in harmony as a human race.

Thefollowing para from the Quran exemplifies the above:

O People of the Book! come to “common term”s as between us and you: that we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with Him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye: "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will.) (HQ: 3: 64).

Evolution itself follows the same rules of religious brainwashing so to speak. Because the very sciences you follow, declare evolution to be a mere theory, and i hope you know what that means Strangr.

The argument put forth by Pilgrim seems more logical, that in a multi cultural society of todays, following any particular faith in a class of many faiths seems a bit too farfetched to achieve any benefit to anyone (That is if anyone wants to do a deeper study)

I suggest a class which is optional where people of different religions can partake in understanding the concepts, theories and practices of different faiths (Which can include Atheism also, since its also gives a theory of mans existance on this planet)

Sounds fair right!!!!

We all get to learn each others point of view that way.

religion is a brain washing to believe in something that never exists . science is the working for us always ,

teach religion is faith schools and leave academic schools free from fairy stories .

you cannot teach evolution of species and creationism together .

Teaching all religions or not teaching them at all have same effect, i.e kicking the religion out.

I don't see what Religion classes have to do with discipline in the schools?

By flor1212• 23 Sep 2010 09:17

religion as part of the curriculum in Social Studies (at least in our country) is to be discussed per se. What I was referring to (and as I understand Pilgram's last sentence) is teaching religious convictions or particulars!

Sadly , I am of the old fashioned brigade. I believe in disipline.

My school used to have "Assembly" in the morning and R.E as a core subject. I think that R.E should be compulsory and the basics of all the major religions taught.

I have no disagreement with religion classes, as long as all religions are represented...however that's not an option for all schools where it's difficult enough to find funding for the basic classes.

Flor I always felt bad for those kids that had to leave the classroom in elementary school because we were going to have a Christmas or Halloween party. I understand why people are nostalgic for the old days of Christmas concerts and nativity plays, etc. But isn't it also wonderful that the world is becoming so multi-cultural and accepting of differences. That's what should be taught in the schools, respect for others.

By anonymous• 23 Sep 2010 09:07

We were introduced to religion in our school. I don't know what's wrong with that. We were taught about Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism & Sikhism in our school. Our teacher for these studies was a Sikh so maybe she was a bit more biased towards her religion but still it was a good attempt by her.

I think it's better this way, you get to learn about all religions and that does help in respecting other religions when you know where they are coming from.

Religion should be taught at home and inside the church!

"whats wrong with a little strictness in schools. I mean i have never seen the kind of rowdies you have in the schools in UK and the US, in the expat community schools overhere."

Have you looked closely or worked with the schools here? The children are far more undisciplined then children back in the US. They learn next to nothing in these schools and most have a hard time adapting to real Western universities (not the "Western" universities here in Qatar which have the same lack of study ethic that the schools here do).

My husband spent his high school years here and out of his class of less than a hundred, two of his peers are in jail in the States for murder, one for rape, one is a high class hooker in the UK who recently graced the tabloids for having a threesome with Wayne Rooney, and one just got kicked out a school here for sleeping with her professor.

Out of my graduating class of around 300, we had one student go to jail on a minor drug charge...

Also, in regards to teaching religion in classes, which religion? Out of my graduating class we had about 70 Christians, 10 Muslims, a couple of Hindus, Mormons, Jeovhah's Witnesses, etc. How do you decide which religion to teach? better to let religion be taught in the home and the church/mosque/temple.

"God is always present with us. Always. Closer than even our own breath."

I agree.. Perhaps , these modern times have made us more cynical and less accepting.

I 'd just like to comment that the world i lived in as a youngster is far different from the world we live in today,

I had respect for my family members and i was much closer to them than many of the children i see nowadays.

More than religion i can relate with the socio-tructural change which the author is talking about.

whats wrong with a little strictness in schools. I mean i have never seen the kind of rowdies you have in the schools in UK and the US, in the expat community schools overhere.

There must be a reason for that - right?

and what about everyone being given the right to express their view points. Some ***** shud not be given that right no matter what.

I feel that religion (none in particular) had kept us a human race better in check then godlessness.

We need something to be afraid of to keep us in line(not judging anyone) - If not god then atleast the state should reprimand stupid behaviour properly.

The movements, be it based on gender or other issues have just divided us further socially.

I am speaking on this issue more as a troubled father than as a lobbyist. ...

let me remind you that Stephen Hawking or Darwin for that matter has only been able to give theories and calculations which he cant prove in a real, definite observable and recordable time frame, just like creationists ( I am going to be Fair :)) -

So all those theories can also be seen as Fantasy no matter how strong the argument you have created in your mind to convince yourself.

adey I do stand corrected on the studies being conducted, though it's in US alone and I guess the statistic will differ once they move to the third world scientists so 80 % of all scientists still sounds nonsense to me.

Here is the original article from which the blogger had copied it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/11/magazine/11wwln_lead.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&adxnnlx=1134447458-Zd70DKe4nq%20t%20dtjpnPsaQ

Can't find any mention of the sample size. I wonder how many scientists took part in the survey.

TC, then give me some text from any religious book that talks positively about other religions.

Can you also explain your extrapolation stuff?

By sTrangR• 22 Sep 2010 22:00
sTrangR

what will happen if everybody brainwashed to do so , not to think about such things but just believe , then we don't have science here , we don't have many medicine which is developed based on evolution . we never know where we came from , we may have some books only which only talks about god and his desires

By adey• 22 Sep 2010 21:59

Such studies have been conducted - see above

"On the whole, around 9 in 10 Americans say they believe in a personal God. When scientists are surveyed, that figure falls to 4 in 10. Among the scientific elite - members of the National Academy of Sciences - fewer than 1 in 10 say they believe in God, with the biologists in particular professing agnosticism or atheism at a rate of 95 percent."

TC I am telling him that I won't waste time checking the religious faith of every scientist in the world on the internet.

It is a bogus stat to support his point as such study has never been conducted.

By sTrangR• 22 Sep 2010 21:51

that makes a big difference unless the books you believe not teaching against other religious beliefs as lies

People who actually understand holy and/or ancient texts know that science and those texts are very compatible

80% scientist don't believe in a God!!!

somebody who understand science will never go behind holy texts , he may be believes there is something supernatural

but never believes in creationist stories.

By TailChopper• 22 Sep 2010 21:39

Teluguy....religious founders did not commit that blunder, rather the followers did

Nomerci..is it your personal experience?? intuition?? research analysis?? or default belief??

The only blunder the religious founders did was to degrade other religions and calling their's superior when the purpose of all was to get humanity close to God by teaching morals. Now in this advanced world such a distinction is upsurd and hard to digest. So it's natural for the religions to loose ground....

By nomerci• 22 Sep 2010 21:29

People who actually understand holy and/or ancient texts know that science and those texts are very compatible. Sadly, very few people actually do understand those texts.

By sTrangR• 22 Sep 2010 21:22
sTrangR

religion and science are not compatible even though some claim that everything they had in their holy texts after some smart guy find out something new with his hardwork and sincerity.

how can teach evolution same time religion in a class , how can be someone to be a evolutionary scientist and same time religious nut.

Anyway this guy talking about (2007 video) Christianity and these people are against another religious teachings like all religious nuts , so how can somebody believes that my god is true his god is lair and vice verse . another thing even though they will talk about the good things they have in their holy texts and keep silent about the bad things like the worst thing in human's history Slavery and circumcision , etc
