Compulsory premarital tests to start soon

They said back in January (http://www.qatarliving.com/node/338111) that this was supposed to happen shortly, so here they are saying it again. Maybe this time it'll happen (wonder what the hang-up was?).

Do you think women here can also request that their future husbands get tested for STD's? I know I would be wanting to see that paperwork...

"Law on premarital medical test soon
A law regulating the premarital medical test will come into effect before this year-end, it was announced in Doha yesterday. The Supreme Council for Health will be organising a workshop on Saturday on the premarital medical examination as part of its preparations to apply the law.

The medical check-up was scheduled to come into effect September 2008, but was postponed for some technical reasons. It would check three types of diseases, including infectious ones like HIV, genetic diseases and chronic disease like blood pressure and diabetes."

I heard someone famous one time suggest that marriages should have a time limit, much as you suggest, and that like a business or job contract, when it expires, if both parties wish to renew it, they can choose to. But that should things no longer be working for both people, they should be able to choose to NOT renew it without too much hassle or heartache.

It would be nice if things worked that way...

As someone who has just ended a 15 year marriage I would suggest we put term limits (say 5 years) on all marriages. Marriage, in much of the western world, is an anachronism, an outdated institution. Just look at the statistics. Fifty per-cent of marriages end in divorce; and I bet that out of the remaining 50% at least 50% of those are not working well. Marriage is a social institution that evolved a long time ago and was adapted for quite different people and social conditions than exist in today's western world, and increasingly, I suppose, throughout much of the developing world.

And I don't think that with the internet this kind of stuff is any better known by certain regions.

I've had Qatar women tell me they couldn't use tampons because it would make them not be virgins (nor would they go to see a gynecologist, for the same reason). I've had Qatari men wonder if women "got off" wearing tampons...

The ignorance is astounding...

come'on ummjake...did you not catch the whiff of sacarsm in my tone?

Regarding the hymen thing, with the intenet stuff, most people know it by now...atleast I'd like to think so

ferret out those situations where both partners are carriers of certain hereditary disorders (thus making it likely that any children they have would also be carriers/develop the disease).

Since so many local marriages are between first cousins, it is a prudent initiative, one that should have been implemented years ago. But at least they're moving on it.

And BTW, there is not a reliable test for virginity. A doctor can check if a woman's hymen is intact, but for many women the hymen becomes broken through normal, physical activities (playing sports in school, falling of a bike, horse-riding, etc.) -- so it wouldn't necessarily be present even if she IS a virgin.

The vast majority of women that I know report that they never bled the first time they had intercourse.

I wish this part of the world would begin to value women as much as they value that little flap of skin.

Ummjake "Do you think women here can also request that their future husbands get tested for STD's?"

That would be a great suggestion as Papilloma virus is rampant amongst male carriers in the region, i'm sure many women wouldn't want that as a wedding gift lol

What??? they are only checking for HIV, genetic, and chronic diseases. What about the virginity ones? (that most men here would want to check from their to-be wives).

Seems like this is purely an initiative from the female population to target us males

it is a protective regulation - and for a lady, and for a gentleman.

i would be happy if it is implemented in my country .. but it is not ..
