Qatar raises over QAR220m for Syria and Gaza during ‘27th Night Live Challenge’
Qatar Charity (QC), in association with Qatar Red Crescent Society and the Qatar Media Corporation, raised over QAR220m, against its original target of QAR40m, in the ‘27th Night Challenge’ held at the Katara Cultural Village on Wednesday. The money will be used for a reconstruction project of 1,500 houses in Syria’s Hama countryside, as well as relief activities in Gaza.
The three-hour campaign, which ended at midnight, collected donations totalling QAR220,400,000.
The event, held in collaboration with the Qatar Red Crescent Society at Katara’s Al Hikma Square, saw online donations from individuals, companies, banks, and other organisations.
Within the first hour, donations touched QAR13m and jumped to QAR90m, before exceeding QAR200m by the second hour. An anonymous philanthropist donated more than QAR30m.
The campaign was broadcast live on YouTube and Qatar TV. The initiative aims to restore 1,500 homes and vital infrastructure including a health center, mosques, primary, preparatory, and secondary schools, a kindergarten, and 50 commercial shops. It will enable families to return to the area.
Dr Bilal Turkia, Syrian charge d’affaires in Qatar, appreciated Qatar’s efforts in supporting the Syrian population.
“Qatar has always been a pioneer in helping and supporting Arab and Muslim nations. It has always stood by people in defending their right to a dignified life,” he said.
“There’re a large number of displaced Syrians and they need a lot to build their homes and restore related services. This campaign will be instrumental in helping many displaced Syrians to start a new, dignified life,” he added.
“Every year, this campaign is organised by Qatar Charity during Ramadan, and the collections always far exceeds the target. It indicates the strong desire of Qatar’s people to support others in need,” said Ahmed Fakhro, QC CEO’s assistant for Resources Development and Communication.
“We’ve extensive and long experience in working in Gaza, and financial donations will further facilitate the ongoing humanitarian projects there,” he added.
Abdulaziz Jassim Hajji, director of Programmes and International Development Department at QC, said several projects implemented in Syria have helped improve the lives of its distressed people.
