Qatar prime minister and interior minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani attended a ceremony to welcome the first commercial vessel at Hamad Port yesterday.

Al Thani inspected Zhen Hua 10, one of the largest heavy load carriers in the world, carrying the first container of cranes for Hamad New Port Project and followed up on progress and phases of the project.

Minister of transport Jassim Seif Ahmed Al Sulaiti was also present, Qatar News Agency reported. Al Sulaiti is the project's steering committee chairman.

The $7.4 billion (QR27 billion) new port is located in Umm Al-Houl near Mesaieed. It is set to soft launch by the end of this year. Completion of the first phase is set for the end of 2016, according to Doha News.
