Qatar, WHO sign Core Contribution Agreement

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Qatar has been stressing the need for international solidarity and combined efforts to overcome the challenge.
Upon the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the country has generously given medical as well as financial aid to over 80 countries in need of support to battle COVID-19.
Last year, the country also joined hands with four other nations including Canada, Denmark, South Korea, and Sierra Leone to launch the Group of Friends of Solidarity for Global Health Security, to facilitate multilateral cooperation to effectively respond to COVID-19.
Now, the country, represented by Qatar Fund For Development has inked an agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) to support the Organization’s Thirteenth General Program of Work (GPW 13) and its COVID-19 response through the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-A).
Known as the Core Contribution Agreement, the first of its kind to be finalized between Qatar and WHO, encompasses support for US$ 10,000,000.
The agreement reflects the strong partnership and commitment between Qatar and WHO to work together to ensure that the most vulnerable communities across the world get urgent assistance when needed.
Her Excellency Qatar’s Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari said, "Qatar's contribution to the WHO affirms Qatar's fulfillment of its obligations and keenness to support WHO's Thirteenth General Program of Work (GPW 13) 2019-2023, to attain the "triple billion" target to ensure that one billion more people benefiting from UHC, one billion more people supported during emergencies and one billion more enjoying better health and well-being.”
“It also supports the initiatives of speeding up the access to the essential supplies needed in the fight against COVID-19, to include accelerating the development of COVID-19 tests, treatment and vaccination while ensuring fair access,” she added.
HE the Minister praised WHO’s pivotal role, particularly in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. She also reiterated Qatar’s willingness to strengthen its partnership with WHO.
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commented, "The COVID-19 pandemic is a powerful demonstration that health is not a luxury item or merely a product of strong and prosperous societies; it is a fundamental human right and the foundation of social, economic and political stability.”
He thanked Qatar for its contribution, “which will support WHO to achieve its mission to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable,” he noted.
