Polio vaccination requirements for Qatar bound passengers

Polio vaccination requirements for Qatar bound passengers

Several Pakistani and other nationals were left shocked as they were barred from entering Qatar because they were unable to prove they’d been vaccinated against polio.

Many Qatar bound passengers were sent back to their respective countries for a lack of proof for polio vaccines. The World Health Organisation declared  the crippling disease as a re-emerged public health emergency with the virus currently affecting 10 countries worldwide.

The WHO mentioned Pakistan, Cameroon and Syria as posing the greatest risk of exporting Polio and asking these countries to encourage and ensure all residents and long-term visitors are vaccinated before travelling to foriegn countries.

Nigeria and Afghanistan have also been included as part of the list. For urgent travel, at least one vaccine dose should be given before departure, according to the emergency committee, which also called for all travellers to be given certificates proving they have been immunised.

The ongoing debate

Pakistan being on top of the list has caused the government officials to adopt strict measures to ensure all passengers are vaccinated between 4 weeks and 12 months prior to international travel.

"Special measures will include establishing mandatory immunisation counters on all airports, border crossings and seaports for all travellers," said Pakistani government spokesman Sajid Ali Shah.

However, the  state minister for Health Sciences Regulation and Coordination, Saira Afzal Tarar, has greatly condemned  travel restrictions on Pakistan imposed by the WHO.

According to her these restrictions will isolate Pakistan and would make life harder for ordinary Pakistanis thereby helping the militants such as taliban achieve their goals.

"By recommending travel restrictions on Pakistan, the WHO has strengthened those forces who actually banned polio drops," she said.

Eradication efforts by the WHO have met with great opposition from the Taliban, which has killed more than 60 vaccinators and banned anti-polio campaigns in areas since 2012. [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Qatar tribune]

my brother was directly affected. he was on vacation for 45 days and on his way back, he was not allowed into Doha and was deported back to complete the process. my advice is that if you were meant to stay longer and you are from the regions mentioned, you should adhere to what have been published. in his own case, Nigeria was included the morning of his arrival yet no plea could let him in.
