Qatar took a major step forward in women’s empowerment when HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani issued a law by which Qatari women aged above 18 could volunteer to be a part of the Qatari Armed Forces.

At the time, the new initiative had drawn wide praise from Qatari women. Qatar is now pushing ahead with its groundbreaking regional initiative.

The Standing Committee, which is in charge of selection of candidates as military officers, has begun work on forming a women’s committee to facilitate selection of women candidates for the armed forces, reported Gulf Times.

The female nominees will be chosen from among secondary school graduates of the current year and the last, according to a statement from the Directorate of Defence Communication at the Ministry of Defence.

The process will be closely monitored by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs HE Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah. He has already instructed officials to remove any difficulties that the candidates may likely face.

The Chief of Staff of Qatari Armed Forces Major General (Pilot) Ghanim bin Shaheen Al Ghanim will be supervising the permanent unified committee for selecting nominees for military entities.
The committee is set to select the best candidates for scientific disciplines such as engineering, communications, computer engineering, medicine and aviation engineering, among others.

Successful candidates will do technical jobs, instead of pure field jobs.
