Newspapers: Polygamy 'could help resolve social problems'?
Local Arabic daily Al Raya quoted Ahmed Hassan Al Malki as saying Qatari men should be encouraged by the government to marry more than once.
He said it will have twin benefits — the problem of many women not finding suitable grooms and remaining unmarried would be solved, and Qatari population would increase.
Late marriage of Qatari women and some young women not getting married is a worsening social problem in the community, a Qatari man said, taking part in a Ramadan tent debate.
The government should encourage polygamy by holding seminars and campaigns to raise awareness, he said. The debate was organised in his majlis.
Al Malki said Qatari working women with children should not be made to work eight hours a day and should be allowed time to raise their children. It is not advisable to leave children at the mercy of housemaids, he said.
"There is no substitute to mother’s love, so her supervision is necessary."
Do you think polygamy should be encouraged?
mohdata , i can understand because i also have gone through the same conditions where my parents worked for our benefits we grow in some sort lonelyness during when we needed them most but when i came to their level where i am married and with a kid , now i understand why they both worked for us . its a very very sensitive and delicate condition ... and what acchabaccha said is also true marriages in different cultures and multiple marriages will only worse the life stlye and especially affect children of both women . May be qatari females getting married to an already married man ; this will one complicate things ,i dont think it would rite way of respecting a women . i would also vote techn's suggestion
A local newspaper's statement that the government should encourage Qatari men to marry more than once as a solution to many Qatari females finding husbands, is a remark from the hip. The statement falls short as it neatly overlooks the realities of life. It is a fact that polygamous marriages experience a higher incidence of marital conflict, family violence, and family disruptions than do monogamous marriages. Moreover, children from polygamous marriages are at greater risk of of both behavioral and developmental problems. As for techn's suggestion that foreigner's should be allowed to marry Qatari females on selective basis is also myopic and not practical. The figurative shrinking of the globe no doubt allows the opportunity for greater intercultural marriages to take place but in such marriages the cultural parameters cause conflicts to multiply as the parents are hardly ever on the same page.
enamor and suraj: this is a qatari figure talking to a qatari paper about qatari demographics and qatari social issues...their lives don't need to revolve around you, the expat. Besides, Qatari or expat, any mother that chooses to work for any reason does so of her own free will...my mom is pretty much a genius who would've left my high flyer dad in her dust if she'd chosen to work...but she chose to stay home and be with me and my brothers every second of our wild lives..my dad worked himself into a position of relative affluence and supported my mom fully in her decision to put kids before career..the result is all 4 of us kids instinctively plant a kiss on our parents' forehead the moment we see them..i would hate it if my mom was at work even if she was doing it only for me..and don't even try telling me that all moms work STRICTLY for their kids' sake and not their own egos/satisfaction/development..
very good point picked Enamor ... all should be treated equally .
Ok so Qatari working women are mothers so they should not work for 8 hours to give proper love to kids and what about that load of expatriate women who put in 10-11 hours everyday n jobs working in big organisations and big companies and their kids also on merci of husbands or housemaids? :( They are not humans?
the religion would solve all their problems regarding this particular issue; if only they/others like them would follow it
Male oriented society will find all "good" reasons for polygamy. Why can't they imagine the stress the lady and the children go through when the man marry many times and spent time with more young and attractive women amongst his multiple wives? The best way to solve the Qatari problem is to give citizenship to foreign people on selective basis.
