Ministers inaugurate Food Safety Lab at Hamad Port
Her Excellency the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Muhammad Al Kuwari and His Excellency the Minister of Transportation and Communications Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti opened the Food Safety Lab at Hamad Port yesterday.
Affiliated to MOPH Central Food Laboratories, the lab utilizes the most advanced analysis techniques to ensure the accuracy and safety of results, which will in turn contribute to maintaining the quality and safety of food in the local market.
Opening labs at the main ports aids in the clearance procedures of food shipments, HE the Minister of Public Health highlighted.
The lab has secured international accreditation (ISO 17025) for the results, prior to its official opening, HE Dr Hanan mentioned.
There are ten test centers and a store of chemicals at the lab. It aims to accelerate analysis and control of food, facilitate the early release of food shipments, and reduce the storage burden on ports.
Minister of Transportation and Communications, HE Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti, commented, “The inauguration of the food safety laboratory is considered a new addition to the Hamad Port’s accomplishments. The lab will contribute to accelerating the processing of food import companies’ transactions in Qatar to protect the interests of traders and importers, in addition to enhancing the requirements of shipping operators.”
Hamad Port Project Steering Committee has constructed the lab building, in line with the highest international technical standards, the Minister pointed out, adding that this comes under the Ministry of Transport and Communications vision to integrate the port facilities’ work mechanisms using sophisticated technology.
"The huge technical capabilities and modern facilities, coupled with the advanced systems at Hamad Port, have contributed significantly to enhancing the mechanisms and regulations of the competent state authorities at the port," HE added.
The lab comprises two units: a chemical analysis unit (pesticide residues) and a microbiological and molecular biology unit.
