Demand to join driving school on the rise in Qatar
Demand to join driving schools is on the rise in Qatar. The prevailing good weather and the influx of expatriates into the country are the main reasons for the increase in enrollment.
The training slots for January are fully booked. Those who have enrolled now can start lessons only in the second week of February.
The waiting period at driving schools in Doha could be as long as three months as there is a huge demand for admissions.
The situation is particularly bad at the private driving schools as they face a capacity issue. There aren’t enough cars and instructors with the school to cater to the huge demand.
When the ban was first implemented in May 2013 by the Traffic Department, most driving schools recorded a significant drop (about 50%) in revenues.
Some of the categories of workers who are ineligible to apply include laborers, butchers, hotel service workers, welders, cooks, gardeners, shoemakers, security guards and others in low-income jobs.
However, after a new list of non-eligible applicants was issued in August last year, the number of learners started to rise again. The trend has continued due to the growing population contributed by an increase in the number of expatriates in the country.
