Some long-term symptoms of COVID-19 can affect health for weeks or months: health official

More than a year since the world has been facing the COVID-19 pandemic and there’s still a lot that seems yet to be discovered.
What is now better known, however, is that the COVID-19 virus can affect each person differently with some experiencing mild symptoms while others may undergo some severe ones.
Even when a person has recovered from the virus, some of its long-term symptoms may still stay with patients for a while.
This was highlighted in a post on the Ministry of Public Health’s (MoPH) Twitter page.
Medical Director of Hamad General Hospital, Dr Yousef Al Maslamani explained that some long-term effects can impact people’s health for many weeks or months.

“The COVID-19 virus is transferred by respiratory droplets. It lives in the body for about 14 days. During these days it can cause renal failure, hepatic failure or lung failure. Lung failure means the patient will need oxygen and to be admitted in the ICU,” Dr Al Masalmani said.
“If the patient survives, he can get rid of these problems. But there are long-term symptoms that might stay with the patient, even if he survives. These can include muscle weakness, nervousness, general fatigue and may need oxygen for a long time,” he added.
Dr Al Maslamani stressed that one should “be aware that a COVID-19 virus can have longer term effects on you.”
