Angel of Death to wing over Afghanistan

British and US forces fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan have unveiled a new weapon which is touted as the world's biggest flying artillery gun. The AC-130 Hercules aircraft, which can strike the enemy from 2,000 ft above, is nicknamed the 'Angel of Death' because of the shape that its anti-missile flares take when they are fired.

AC-130 Hercules

The aircraft, which is rarely deployed in daylight, carries a powerful 105 mm field gun which can vapourise targets at a range of 1,200 yards, the Daily Mail reported.

As the Hercules drops from 2,000 ft to as low as 80 ft above the battlefield, the Howitzer normally used by ground troops fires ten rounds a minute and has a back-up of three 25 mm Gatling cannons spewing out 7,500 rounds every 60 seconds to produce the ultimate airborne gunship.

Once a camera sited under the fuselage has fixed on the target,it sends the co-ordinates to an onboard computer and the Angel of Death is ready to unleash its deadly load, the report said.

This has also been used by the US Military in Desert Storm back in 1991.

C130..is an old air craft...very old...its modified by many countries including pakistan/india/america etc etc ...but its not effective in heat of full fledge war...its only effect for goose hunting... like in Afghanistan...what a shame!!

This is old stuff...used in the Iraq War to "Shock and Awe"...thats why its mostly used in night time to get more "effect"...

Its also used mostly on soft targets.... it cant out run a fighter plane on its tail....

It can clear a football field filled with people at one go... better than Hitler's Gas Chambers ...albeit a little more expensive....

Britexpat, I would think that an A10 is more effective - and it is definitely more manouverable in the Field
