Special Needs - Profoundly deaf.

I have a 10 year old daughter who is profoundly deaf and has bitaleral cochlear implants. She is currently in mainstream School and has support on a daily basis (45 minutes to 1 hour) from a teacher of the deaf. She also has weekly speech and language therapy. She does not use sign language.

We are considering a family move to Doha - has anyone had experience of this type of issue? What about Schools? Speech and language therapy etc? Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I wont recommend you shifting here. My brother is hard of hearing and we have been living in Doha for the past 9 yrs. There are no facilities in any school I have known who can help children with hearing diabilities.

We could nt even find a sign language teacher for the past 9 yrs which is very frustrating

Compass (at least my daughter's teacher at the time) refused to work/accomodate with my daughter with Asperger's. We switched to another school, but most private schools will not work/accept students with special needs.

I would speak to them directly to make sure you and them know exactly what to expect.

My son has high-functioning autism, which resulted in behavioral problems and they worked with us as we figured out what was going on and how to best help him. I have nothing but positive things to say about Compass :)

I know it is a good school - my friend teaches there and it is well regarded - however, it is one of the most expensive in Doha

We have been in touch with the Schools in Doha and so far only Compass International School has said that they would be able to take Zoe providing we can get the support she needs - they have identified a Speech and Language Therapist. Does anyone have any parental comments on Compass?

Thanks.

Gillian

Here I don't think you will get even support groups, unless each community forms one to support each other in these types of situation.

Speech therapy is available, but if you are seeking a native English speaker to conduct it, then that's a hunt on its own, although I remember someone offering their services here in QL.They are available privately.

It's sad but true that education for special needs is still in infancy here.

This is true unfortunately, even a large well known company here advises families not to come if they have children with special needs as the country is just not set up for them

MikaylasMom is right. If she needs support in school you will need to bring that support with you. You'll also need to make sure that she'll be accepted by a school at all before you come out. It's getting better in Doha, but things are still quite primitive when it comes to children with special needs of any kind. :(

Hi, there are virtually no services like that here. Things here are very primitive as far as healthcare services for special needs people. I have been here 4 years and it took me 3.75 to find someone to diagnose my daughter's behavioral issues. This is not the place to move to and get continued therapy for your daughter. In fact we are moving home to get better services and doctors for my daughter.

In general, mainstream schools do not offer this kind of specialist help. You should, however, be able to get more information from:
