Seatbelts????

byberg
By byberg

I come from a very safe country (I dare to say) regarding driving! We have about the same amount of deaths in the traffic as in this country but we are ten times more people. We have a strict regulation and there is no parent that would allow their kids to sit in the car without a seatbelt.

The injuries you get on you child when it smashes for exemple into the frontwindow is often mortal of gives severe injuries!

Doesn´t people know this??????

I aces my heart to see all these kids jumping up and down with no belts in the cars!!!!!

Can somebody explain what is in the mind of all adults when they ignore their kids safety?

I do hope you feel better from using this forum to vent....it aint good to be angry.

And just to make something clearer....when I said there are changes being made now, I meant from the government. So I hope that the knowledge that people with the power are acutely aware of this makes you feel somewhat better!

The discussion began before the accident but this accident just highlights all the points raised. and remember things take time esp a change so don't expect too much too soon. All journeys begin with one step.

...blond and wise.....I guess we have something in common...:)

I sure hope this accident made a change in the opinion....as Scarlett said.....why do the same mistakes that we in Sweden did 20 years ago.....just do a copycat and save lives!!!!

Anas1.....is it yor kid on the picture? I just wanted to tell you...It is crucial for a kids safety that they have seatbelts......and if they are small, up to 3 years old it also importand that they travel in the car backwards in a special chair.

In Sweden, Volvo works really good on this matter...maybee you can check at their place in Doha, Salwa Road, to find really proper seat.

.....tuff words......but maybee true......sometimes you can really wonder what goes on in their minds!!!!

Cant somebody whos doing this explain....has to be somebody here leaving their kids jumping in the carseats while driving...there are for sure many on the roads.....

....after these words they will probably not say anyway ....

.....I just hope that the Qatari government wakes up and follow other rolemodels in this matter.....the government have success in the recently tuffer trafficregulations...haven´t they.....so why not also take care of the kids?

What brought this to my attention is looking in a museum of Qatari items...just a mere 30 years ago it was incredibly different. The photos reminded me of the old desert movies you used to see like Casablanca...

The Qataris are very advanced in almost all aspects. I know in the States, it was very unfortunate but it was cheaper for the car manufacturers to pay out in lawsuits than it was to require seatbelts in all cars...and even then, it was only in the front seat! Same thing with the gas(petrol) tanks that exploded upon impact...no recall until too many people sued them. Surely it won't come to that here before seat belts are required for children. That would be very sad indeed. Be nice if they learn from other countries' mistakes and tragedies rather than experience them for themselves.

And yes, I know..its not just the Qataris that do this..I've seen many different nationalities using this behaviour.

I always wear a seatbelt..its second nature to belt up...that comes from being in a car accident in high school, where I was IN the backseat. In a 1972 Buick Le Sabre...BIG heavy car...got hit head on, we were stationary and the Mustang that hit us was only going about 50 mph...my sister's friend went through the windshield...sister (who was driving and wearing her seatbelt) got a knock on the head from steering wheel...Me...back seat, no seatbelt available...moved the front seat up 8 inches, with my shins and collar bones..both of which left very deep impressions in the steel bar in the back of the front seat...have worn a seat belt ever since...

Perhaps the parents should be required to hold parenting licences before having kids. You can't leave everything to the poor maid.

By anonymous• 13 Apr 2008 20:00

its not rocket science to work out that if a kid is loose in the car it'll be through the windscreen faster that a land cruiser on ice.......its just stupidity really, no excuses and plus, if the kids are loose then they'll kill the passenger and driver as they are projected through the windscreen!

By poolplan• 13 Apr 2008 19:57

Its stupid parenting really. They don't seem to realise that in the event of an accident they may come off lightly, but the kids are the ones who will get it.

Thank you for a wise answer....I guess you maybee on the spot....

For me it´s strange even if one can consider Qatar to be a ´"young" state in that matter...the Qataris are as I have seen well educated and aware of the world sorrounding them in a great way....and they are very quick in adapting other countries in many other ways.

To make myself clear....it`s absolutely not just Qataris who drives around like this......

....but It´s the Qataris who have the weapon to stop it!

consider how long your country has been using cars/buses, as major forms of transportation and how long your country has been in modern existance. Now compare that to Qatar...it will take the same issues that your country faced many years ago for the laws and mindsets to change here. Remember, Qatar is still a very young nation that is modernizing at a tremendous rate..some things have yet to catch up to the speed at which they are progressing. Unfortunately, this is one of them. Hopefully they will learn to put those laws into effect BEFORE too many more children get seriously injured or die due to ignoring the laws of physics.

Ok please, don't take me to task for the last comment...it wasn't meant as a slam to the Qataris' intelligence...they are very intelligent, but I guess they  just haven't seen the end results of even minor accidents when children and infants aren't restrained in a carseat. They become human projectiles.

How could we expect other motorists to let their children   use seatbelt? Even themselves don't use seatbelt how much more their kids?

By byberg• 13 Apr 2008 17:56

I guess maybee you work at Hamad, if you are and you react to this, there must be more people reacting regarding this issue in your workingfield.

Is this something people talk about at hospitals?

Since I´m an expat just quit recently moved here maybee I miss many debates! I wonder If this particular question is a subject of troubleshooting on govermental level?

it's true a lot of kids don't wear seatbelt, even when they are at the backseat :(

and you'll be surprised there are people driving while their small kids are sitting on their lap :(

Something happen in our country.....30 years ago....everybody started due to PR and education from the government....to use belts. I just wonder...

many things can be dangerous in many diff matters....but we always tend to look after our kids....but in this specific subject the caring is lacking and I´m curios....why?

By byberg• 13 Apr 2008 17:14

Some drivers having a landcruiser is actually responsible drivers!!! At least in my opinion, cause I have one.....:) But one of the reason is unfortunately of course to protect my family from other cars of the same size :(....anyway!! ...

Why isn`t the protection of the children in a greater highlight in this country. I haven`t read a single article about this issue even if they have a lot of discussions regarding traffic laws nowadays?

Is it a matter of education?

Is it a matter of culture?

Is it a matter og negligation?

What is it!!!????

Is there somebody out there who drives without seatbelts who can explain?

It's really sad. They'll just realize the importance of safety for their love ones (not only for the child but for adults also) when they will loose a love one. And they will cry and blame themselves for the rest of their lives. I see to much of these scenarios inside the A/E (emergency) dept. of Hamad Hospital. Anyone can feel pity for them but the thing is I'm not sure if they pity themselves since after a few days they still do the same undiscipline behavior on the road, and doesn't learn from their mistakes. Pls. don't take my views in general since I know a few local people were good and discipline enough, the educated ones. Lol!

5 children were killed in a crash the other day. It was in the newspaper today. It's not just that they don't put seat belts on them, but they let them stand up and crawl around all over the car. Among many things I've seen them sat on the dash board, stood on the front seat, sat on the driver.....

Ugh, saw a little girl no more then 2 years old today sticking her head out of a sun roof.  All I could picture in my minds eye was the car being hit from behind and that little girls neck breaking...or worse

I wish they would actually bring in a law of using child seats cause I cringe everytime I see a child standing on the seat or hanging out of the window, which I have seen numerous times.
