School and kindergarten in Doha
Hello everyone,
today I take part for the first time in this forum and want to say hello to everybody.
We are a German family with two children at the age of 5 and 3. My husband has the offer to go to Qatar. Of course we as his family want to follow him as soon as possible. For this reason I would have thousands of questions;-) But I will refine myself to ask only the most important one: Is it a problem to find an adequate school for our children? Our daughter visited for one and a half years a KG of a British International School abroad. But now she has been living for more than half a year in a German environment. So I am a little concerned about these entry-level tests. And our son understands English quite well but refuses to speak.
I would ask you to share your experiences with me. Can you me some useful hints or recommendations?
This would be very helpful for us. Thank you very much

Well, you just have to keep trying. Even the most popular schools do have vacancies from time to time, as expats and their families come to the end of their contracts and move on. Sometimes information on school websites has passed its "sell by" date and the school is going to open a new school building, so that tere WILL be some empty places.
I am surprised that more parents do not start their own schools. If you are going to do homeschooling, why not have a few more children in the class?
Thank you very much for your replies.
Of course I have investigated all the websites available on www. But some really made me a bit disillusioned with their advices that they have no vacancies in certain grades:-( . And we are on the list for the German school as well, but as far as I know it is not sure that they manage to open this year. And because my children need to finish here in Germany in July, I have no possibility to go earlier to Qatar.
But for sure we will find a solution.
Again, thank you very much this forum really is a big help for me.

Dear Mermaid70,
I used to teach at the British School in Bucharest and some of my best pupils were German children. I am sure that your children would be happy at some of the British schools in Doha, provided that you can find places for them. All I can do is to echo what other QL posters have already said, which is to do your research thoroughly and find out as much as you can via the Internet. Some schools have quite strong links to particular companies, so you need to explore this possibility. I do not know anything about the new German school, but I expect that the German Embassy could give you some information and the schol itself should have a website. Via your husband's company, I would imagine that you could make contact with some German families who are already here in Doha and they also may be able to advise you.
I hope that this is helpful!

Try doing a search on here - there's loads and loads of school info on here. There's also a German school opening here. You should be able to do a search on here and find the link to that article as well.

Hi Mermaid,
it is a problem but if you have a good sponsor then a place will be secured thru the company. For a lott of us is this not the case so if the company has a schoolplace clapp in your hands and enyou. What you can do is come as quick as possibel and go to as much schools as possibel to get them registered. The testing time has started.
There is also one other possibility, if you contact the german ambassy then they will give you information about the new to open german school in Doha in the fall. If you have more questions just ask. You can also contact the "patenservice" for the germans they will answer also all questions
good luck
