Have a special needs child?

Hi All -

I am working with several other women to start a support group for parents who have kids with special needs. So far the special needs include Autistic Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Downs Syndrome, Oral Dyspraxia and PDD-NOS, but we're open to pretty much anything.

Initially we'll have a couple of monthly coffees - one in the morning and one during the evening/weekend - so we can exchange ideas, information, frustrations and successes. As things progress we'll start having events and film nights as well. We have lined up a speech pathologist to discuss speech/language issues and will likely have an ASD guru from the UK speak to us in Jan/Feb (she also does assessments, in case anyone is interested - but she won't arrive until January). We're also looking at art therapy classes for sensory issues, social skills classes for kids who struggle with relationships, etc.

To get on the email list for the upcoming Special Needs Support Group events, please send an email to [email protected]. In the email, please let us know:

(1) your name
(2) mobile number and
(3) your child's "special need". (If it has not been formally diagnosed that's fine - just let us know what you think is going on.) Knowing the needs of our "members" will help us bring resources together.

All information will remain confidential and will only be shared with the other organizers of the support group once things get going.

If you are a provider of services that might be of interest to the support group, please do contact us as well!

Thanks,

So glad to see that there is interest and support! We're looking forward to helping the mums of differently-abled kids. . .it's a different world here in Qatar but if we pool together it will make such a difference!

We could look at you doing something down at the farm too...

We don't have any therapy dogs, but we could select some of the quieter ones for walking and petting:-)

There is a school for special needs children, called Hope Qatar. Check up them if they are also interested.

I just went through your post today and I'M so glad that someone has come up with something like this to help those who have differently abled children.

I'm a counselor who have done masters in psychological counseling and bachelors in communicative english with specialisation in psychology.

I have also done my neuro linguistic prgramming (USA)

I have been looking for work in the same field but has not suceeded in finding one for a long time.

I would like to take part in the gathering( If my notorious 10 month old baby lets me:))and also i would like to know if i could do any kind of services .

Thanking you
