HBKU’s QEERI commemorates The Young Innovator Award 2020 winners

The second edition of the Young Innovator Award competition hosted by Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) saw the participation of over 600, comprising of local, community, and international school students in Qatar.

Over 350 team applications were submitted for this year’s competition, focused on mitigating climate change. The competition was categorized into Junior, Intermediate, and Senior based on age and showcased artwork, research posters, research projects respectively.

According to Dr. March Vermeersh, Executive Director at QEERI, the competition aims to promote science and research among young people, a fundamental component of QEER’s mission.

Highlighted in the competition submissions, he believes that the youth possess great potential and have a crucial role to play in bringing about positive sustainable changes.

Parents, teachers, and community members showed their support during The Young Innovator Award finals, which took place virtually over a period of 2 days.

QEERI’s management and senior staff, as well as industry experts from the field of sustainability comprised of judging panel members.

The competition provided a unique opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge, presentation skills, and confidence to their peers and the community.

Ali Othman Al Maraghi, an 8th grader from Qatar Leadership Academy, expressed his gratitude towards QEERI for creating a platform that allowed him to improve his skills aimed at scientific research, communication, team collaboration, and time management.

Philippine School Doha’s Quinn Feodore Dela Cruz Esperanzate took home first prize in ‘Junior Category 1’, whereas Olive International School’s Athif Sherif won first place in ‘Junior Category 2’.

In the ‘Intermediate Category 1’, first place went to Unica De Vera, Sulwan Rohing, and Daniela Suson from Philippine School Doha, while The Next Generation School’s Simrah Salman and Maryam Fatima captured the first position in the ‘Intermediate Category 2’.

Finally, Kevin Davis and Anna Jerry Manathra from Rajagiri Public School, and Sooriyaselvan Narendran and Manogna Jayi from DPS Modern Indian School won first place in ‘Senior Category 1’ and Senior Category 2’ respectively.

The Young Innovator Award 2020 competition reiterated QEERI’s commitment to supporting Qatar’s efforts to address its grand challenges, while also contributing toward capacity building among its youth.
