Off to study in Canada

I'll be going to Canada to study in an university. I'll be starting my first semester in January in a university in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This is the first time I've ever been in Canada so i could really use your help. Since i live in the middle east and especially in a developing country, the country is way way way way behind in everything. I wont be accustomed with a lot of the things in Canada.

What are the people over in Canada like?

Is there anything i should know before i go there?

Whats the most appropriate type of winter clothing to wear?

I appreciate any response you guys give me. Thanks

I dont think the jackets you have bought in Qatar are going to work in the -20C cold of Canada.

Woah, Woah, Woah. Calm down people. I would like to thank people who have replied to this thread. If GoSensGo comment offended some of you have the decency to ask him why he thinks this way instead of just shooting off angry comments toward him.

Well actually i bought some good heavy winter jackets and hoodies from the shops in villagoe mall and they cost soo much but they are the big buffy clothing you can count on so it was worth the money plus with all the taxes over there clothes might be more expensive.

Im going to be studying marketing and other business studies courses e.g. managering etc.

is cold dude. Better buy some down filled jackets in NS.

Try to make some friends there and everything will be fine. Just wondering what are you gonna study there?

When I heard the term "x-nationality chennel" first time here in Doha. Then started wondering what's going on and only at that time noticed that each community (nationality) and sub-community has its own channels and routes and passes and under-passes.

Thank God, till now am keeping myself away from "channels" and managing to survive.

That is true, that especially here in Doha everything is based on nationalities. Every day I can read in the advertisement that X company is looking for engineers/nurses/secretary etc. from Y or Z nationalities. That's a fact here.

And by the way all Canadians are nice so far I have met! :D

in Canada (ONTARIO, by the way!!),I have very good friends lebanese, they are very friendly and nice people... lebanese are very quite in Canada, I never knew they have any "syndrome" until I came to Middle East...

Racism and the way of treating people based on their nationalities is a big crime in Canada. As a matter of fact you can omit in your CV your nationality, your religion, as well as your age, marital status... And even on the interview they don’t have the rights to ask you about it (at least during the official part of the interview) in order to avoid as I have said, treating candidates depends on their nationality, religion, age, and so on…

That’s why I am surprised to hear these kinds of voices here from NS residents and from those who went to study in there.. I still don’t understand where do they get it from?

I think he got that by experience :D

Well, unfortunately this is one of most people's sickness. Loving self and thinking that the "self" is the best and the ideal and blablabla.

We have this syndrome in Lebanon as you might already know or notice very wide spread. It really makes me sick.

Where these people get all that from?? That's what he has been taught in Canada?? too bad...

"People in Nova Scotia are very nice people compared to other provinces.".. I beg your pardon?? What is this kind of statement??? You have studied in Halifax, haven’t you? Why these “very nice” people from Halifax haven’t taught you very important thing: to be “very nice” and polite?? Or have you been a very bad student? And even though “People in Nova Scotia are very nice people”, you couldn’t really learn anything “very nice” from them??

I went to Dalhousie University back in the ninties and could offer few information.

Halifax is a nice town and has 3 Universites and few colleges.

People in Nova Scotia are very nice people compared to other provinces.

For winter clothing, you have to wear the winter coat, golves, and warm hat. I advise that you buy the coat from Canada and not bring one from Qatar because you will not find the appropriate type in Qatar.

School is not hard but you need to work hard to go by.

Let me know if you need any more information

Best wishes,
