I want to learn Arabic while I have this chance of living among arabic speaking masses. Any suggestions on whats the best way to do it? Any weekend or after office hours Arabic teaching institutions?
....learning languages, now if you were to ask me if the Egyptian dialect was Arabic, I'd answer yes. I see it as a widely familiar form of colloquial Arabic, spread notably by Egyptians like Yusuf Almaghribi, and later reformer/ secular intellects. But if you'd ask about the "Egyptian Language", I'd respond differently.
Anyway, as per sociolinguists, the Egyptian dialect is considered a distinct variety of Arabic. So, by no means it'd be considered Classical Arabic (nor Modern Standard Arabic).
.....learning languages, we're aware that local dialects are something and classical Arabic is something else. No one claimed otherwise on this thread, actually, the difference has been confirmed.

happy...you would know a lot of Urdu words. Urdu is kind of a mixture of Arabic, Persian, Pashto, Sinskrit & a few other languages....but honestly, I find it the most sweetest language of the world. :-)
shapil will be going in August, will let you know.
ghazalz sis, just showing that there is nothing different between us. We may be Indians or Pakistanis officially but we are one and the same at individual level.
LT abe yaar tune bataya kyon nahin tu punjabi hai, ithe formality di angrezi wich punjabi gaal den nu dil karda hai. Indian taan koi punjabi hai nahin, tu hi mera kabayan hai hun taan :D
Khattak...i have enough thread to lose so let the 'khappay' boys roll and i am learning multiple languages in one thread. But I wonder how come everyone did exactly the opposite when i said "Shooo Barrah" :)
lol LT you are cool man, till now I treat Khattak, Khanan and dot.com as my pathan friends, guess I should add you to that list. God bless me, 4 pathan friends :-P
Hey hey Khattak, I just checked with my Pakistani friend who shares accommodation with me, he told me it means something totally different in pushto :-P
Khapee is just saying "happy" in a typical Pashto accent. Khappay is a Sindhi word...means 'needed'. You're right happy...its somehow related to Mr. President Zardari. He said "Pakistan Khappay" after his wife was assassinated.
btw...I am learning proper Arabic through Fanar. Still in the basic level where they teach us the Arabic alphabets and its correct pronunciation...Though, I already know it but still worth of it.
.....We can turn this thread to something very useful. I've always wanted QL owners to dedicate a QL section for Arabic Common Basic Words and Phrases.
....shapil, sorry indeed, I copied a link into your thread wrongly, where I shouldn't. I meant to paste your thread's link into the other Arabic thread here:

No worries Shapil : )
LT...I've already disappointed too many QLers...do you want to be the next?
ghazalz...Yeah, too many words of Arabic are quite easy to understand for us...Thanks to Urdu :-)
....lemontree, to address a man, you should say you are "bashoosh" (without the letter "a")
Khattak, consider it done man :)
I am still worried about Khanan & Darude but guess we can handle them :-P
Or maybe they will get busy with each other :))
WK...That would be wonderful. I am getting excited :D
Yes, KHATTAK, when I heard this word for the first time, I co-related it to 'Bashashat' freshness.

thanks for defining me happy...i never knew i am bashoosha..and defining oneself is most difficult job in unverse
Thanks happy...I believe ghazalz had rightly used the word 'bashoosha' for you... :)
I think the Urdu word "bashash" is being derived from 'bashoosha'...which means 'fresh'.
....KHATTAK, 'bashoosha' is said to a person with an accommodating smiling face, who barely shows unpleasant expression even in troubled times.
Anrejiii teacher ji agaye lagda ye... sab ko apney baksa utha lo punjabi class kithey hai paa je ?

LT abe yaar tune bataya kyon nahin tu punjabi hai, ithe formality di angrezi wich punjabi gaal den nu dil karda hai. Indian taan koi punjabi hai nahin, tu hi mera kabayan hai hun taan :D

LT are you Punjabi?
Happy ianti bashoosha, Ismi ghazala wa ana ohibbo lughatul Arabia:)
Khattak...i have enough thread to lose so let the 'khappay' boys roll and i am learning multiple languages in one thread. But I wonder how come everyone did exactly the opposite when i said "Shooo Barrah" :)

Wow...it's motivating!
.....KHATTAK, very accurate sir.
looks are deceiving ..and in case of morons they look extremely serious as a first impression
Exactly happy...thats what our teacher explained to us by mentioning 'rajul' and 'rijil'. (I hope I pronounced it well) :D
Khappay also means naughty.
LT you looked a very serious guy in real life, guess you are not :-P
LOLzzz...LT, well in that case...its "Khpay".
....whyteknight, thanks a lot, I just read it.
KHATTAK, One Arabic word, would have different meanings, by a subtle change of the vowels, the same reason why vowing in Quran is mandated.
if happy thinks am gentleman...i beleive it and that makes me a head moron
khataak according to the latest meaning...u r pulling my khappay
:-P
WK...that would be 'legs' with a slightly different pronunciation. :D
Hey hey Khattak, I just checked with my Pakistani friend who shares accommodation with me, he told me it means something totally different in pushto :-P
LT....happy has just ruined your chances of becoming QL's Moron... You are OUT.
ur rejection happy, whatelse..
na khappay happy happy na khappay
...lemontree, there's no doubt in my mind that I'm speaking with a gentleman. Otherwise, I wouldn't be on this thread. Nice people in here....
Damn...One word with so many meanings...
.....Then in this case whyteknight, we should all get on lemontree's case to see what exactly he's repenting?...LOL
lol happy...u googled it didnt ya?? khappay is non-offensive word which ahs multiple meaninng in multiple context...simplest is "affordable"
Happy check your Inbox :P
Khattak in punjabi khappay means to repent :-P
Guess that's what Khappay meant for Zardari :P
.....Thanks KHATTAK, and very best of luck with your Arabic endeavor.
Still in the basic level where they teach us the Arabic alphabets and its correct pronunciation...Though, I already know it but still worth of it.
...Got it KHATTAK, but you do realize this is not the standard Arabic? I really don’t know of the origin.
whyteknight, I think khappee has something to do with the Pakistani political system, not sure though.
Khappee khappee happee happee pappi :-/
What does that mean, I have no clue :-/

But yes! These curse words are the first an expat/tourist would catch, and they stick!
...whyteknight, we have already started classes here, haven't we?
Happy I will give you PDC?
Why not, "A journey to the past through the eyes of the Queen Nefertiti" That is wishful thinking!
....but edifis, this is only vaguely the meaning, not the exact beautiful words. My translation is not as eloquent.
...Where is my money? QR 150 for each translated line..:))
edifis..Now that i know its meaning, i thought that you were singing that song for Happy2.
Thank you so much HappyHappy!
I heard this song so many times and I liked the song very much. So I was eager to kno the meaning.
Happy Happy when are we starting, I don't know any Arabic :(
.....edifis, here is a quick translation for Enta Omri..
Your eyes took me back to my days that have been wasted.
They taught me to regret the past and all its wounds.
Whatever I saw before my eyes saw you was a wasted life.
You're my life, you're my life
With your light, the dawn of life has just started.
You're my life, you're my life.
Lets do the bimillah of learning a new language by getting to know some common curses (bad words) in arabic...so which one takes the top prize?
can i join also?
....edifis, yes, it literally means "you're my life".
Happy if it's free translation why to pay?
hehe ok I will schedule classes with you, when do we begin and what's the fees :P
Yes nice song, and I know this much
"Inta Omri" means "you are my everything"
Rest I don't know.

......Oh! edifis, this is one of my favorite Umm Kulthum songs.....
