Getting ready to study abroad
Time passes swiftly. We might be deluded into thinking that each phase of life will take its own sweet time to pass by. But children seem to grow up overnight, and before you know it, they are ready to leave the nest.
Living in Qatar, parents have options to have their children study at the best schools. When children outgrow school years, the chances of them leaving the roost for studying abroad are very real. Based on their study preferences, apply in universities over the world. Selection and admittance to a preferred university is a joyous occasion. And then the preparations start.
Here are some tips to study abroad to help ease the transition for both parents as well as children.
-Gather as much information as you can about the city and university you will be staying in. the university guide will be helpful as well as the city guide. Browse through information online.
-Get your papers and documents in order and are updated. Double check the requirements multiple times and make sure everything is organized within reach at a safe place. Make at least 3 scanned copies of all important documents.
-Make sure your visa and passport have the proper window for your entry to the country. Get your passport renewed if it is expiring after 6 months.
-Learn some basic cooking skills (boiling an egg is good, but learning 5 different ways to make egg is a lifesaver).
-Book your tickets in advance to get cheaper deals and to save from last minute hassles.
-Save and spend wisely. Have enough cushion in your spare account to help you along your way in adjusting to the new place.
-If you know someone already living at the destination you’re traveling to, call them up to ask for pointers.
-Make lists. List up everything that could come in handy immediately upon arrival at the new place. That way you don’t have to buy things as soon as you land in the new country.
-Don’t go overboard in your luggage; just take few essentials like toiletries and basic requirement tools. You can build up the items once you are there.
-Learn the basic words of the language if it’s completely foreign to you. Learn more about languages used at the country.
-Pack your absolute essentials, a good amount of weather appropriate clothes, but not too much to clog your luggage.
-When you reach the university, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask for help whenever you need it. Who knows, you might find more friends this way. Many will be in the same position, and the bond will foster upon assisting each other.
-Stay in touch with your family through phone or online apps. Keep them updated about your whereabouts if you are traveling for even short distances. Families worry about you when you are far and on your own. Keep assuring them that you are adjusting well. If you are facing any problems, share with them. Parents are wise in these matters and want the best for you.
-Focus on your studies. Don’t let your mind wander too much or get bewildered by the new atmosphere. Remember the purpose you set out for and give it your best shot.
-Mingle with people familiar to your culture, but make new friends too from different places. Versatility brings surprises and you will learn people skills as you meet and mingle with more people.
-If you want to explore new places, try to go in groups. When you get familiar with the place, venture out alone and be smart in your choices. Avoid isolated places after dark. Take pictures on your phone of landmarks that you cross, just in case you forget a specific turning on your way back.
-Make the most of your free time. Instead of snoozing away, explore some more and have fun. You will have a store of memories when you leave university, which will make for great stories too later.
