Computer Buffs, I need help

I need help and I know there are some computer buffs. I think Owen & Tallig? Or anyone else who can help. I got this new HP laptop that has Vista in it. It does not have any other systems in it, but when I started it in the beginning I got several downloads, which I thought were part of the sysytem. It does not have windows programs. But one of the download were thru Java something and the offered thru Sun something a program which, according to them is windows compatible. OpenOffice.org, I downloaded it and started using it. It is a nice program and offers a lot. However, and now comes my question on what to do, I saved some items that I put on my USB and then tried to open it on another computer and it will not let me. Nor can some of my friends open attachments written in this program. What did I do wrong. Is this program not compatible, should I, or/and them, do something to be able to open this or have I been a cheapskate and really should have bought the windows system?
Please help me. I do not know much about computers. I am a woman, who like using a car sticks the key into the ignition and expects it to work. I feel the same about a computer!
Thanks

As I got a name check in the original post (I assume I'm tallig!) I feel compelled to reply, though the solution has already been explained above by stryker-uk. Hope you've sorted it out Aisha.

Hi Aisha

The folks who've replied are correct but....

Since you are a "person" (I know many very computer literate ladies) who expects her computer to do what it should, I'll keep it simple....

You create a document on your computer using Open Office "Writer" and save it.

Make sure that you use "Save As", and the file type option Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP is chosen.

Job done.

By the way if you open a name.doc file in OpenOffice and then directly save it (instead of using Save As), this should be OK.

For lots more help look at the web site: http://www.openoffice.org/

Have some faith as the Open Office package is very good but sometimes there aren't lots of people to help unlike MS Office.

If this doesn't sort it out then just send me a personal message, I have loads of time out here and would be glad to help ....

My motto - "Ditto" - if you saw the movie you'd understand.....

The assigned program to read the files could not be approriate. Right-click and select "open with" and look for the right program

Java is essential coz these days Many Programs r written in Java Language.

OpenOffice .org is Similar to Microsoft Word.

OOo is OpenSource i.e it comes free while the other one is of charge.

OOo saves in ODF while Mircosoft Word saves in doc, docx , etc.

By Default , Microsoft Word can not read or write what u saved thru OOo.

Here is the Plugin for it to Work.

Ur friends/ Family should download and install this in order to see ur Documents.

I stopped the USB properly. But why does this affect a attachement in an email?

Open office is a program similar to Microsoft office.

When you save the files to your USB stick check the format that they are saved in. There should be a compatible file type, .doc or rich text format or similar. The default filetype may not be cross platform compatible (ie not compatible with MS Office).

Did you stop the device (USB) before removing it from your computer?

Do you mean to say you are unable to access the files in both computers?

I got an error in my USB and it does not open. So, am selecting "Explore" instead of "Open" and it is working like that.
