Maid cleared of theft charge

Citing “unreasonable and contradicting statements from the plaintiff”, a Filipina housemaid (39) was acquitted of stealing a watch belonging to her employer’s daughter in January 2008.
The court heard that the employer, also a Filipina, filed a police report in June 2008 claiming that her nine-year-old daughter lost a watch “five months ago” and that she saw the maid “wearing” it.
The acquitted maid, 39, told the interrogators that the daughter of her employer gifted the watch in September 2007 and the court agreed with her statement.
Explaining the non-guilty verdict, the judge concluded that the plaintiff, 32, filed a theft report in June, soon after the maid absconded from the house due to “ill treatment”.
