What are the important tasks that a Quantity Surveyor of a Building Construction must know?
By faisfareed •
Some people in Construction industry think that a Quantity Surveyor's job is only Taking-off and measurement. But a Professional Quantity Surveyor really must know, about
Capital allowances
Commercial Management of Construction
Conflict avoidance ,management and dispute resolution procedures
Construction technology and environmental services
Contract administration
Contract practices
Procurement and Tendering
Programming and planning
Project evaluation
Project financial reporting and controlling
and more and more tasks..
I like to know comments from the expertise in construction industry about this topic..
Thank you..

Although traditionally QS’s are failed Architects (although generally believed to be from the 19th Century, there are accounts of some of Christopher Wren’s less artistic apprentices doing the measurement and take off in the 17th Century), they are also considered one of the widest based professions as they need to understand engineering, design, finance, accounting, law and maths.
As a Quantity Surveyor I would agree with your wide range of subjects, BUT it depends on the size of the organisation you are in as to what your role will be.
Claims and Dispute Resolution is usually a specialisation, so is Taking off and preparing Bills of Quantity.
A Professional QS Practise, would normally have a People that specialise in both the above and other who deal with the day to commercial management of Valuations and Variations.
A Contractors QS usual has less focus on the Preparation of BoQ’s but has a wider focus on the rest.
The individual company, project, size, team etc, will all lead to a slightly different role.
