I've had enough of this
I've had it with the small shops here, I would appreciate it if the QL members join me in this movement.
I went to a small shop in alkor, and the change was an edible item my choice it could be a chewing gum or a choclate, not the 25dhs or the 50dhs that I deserve.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a miser nor I'm asking you to be one, but if someone says to me the change is 50 dhs and hands me a chewing gum, I feel thats a rip off.
That chewing gum costs no where close to 50dhs and on top of that i don't like that chewing gum.
So getting frustrated with this, I started handing my alkhor meera (the one inside the RG/QG community) the chewing gums back whenever the issue of change came and or if i didn't have my chewing gums I would pay by debit card even if its QR2.50
So the next time you see a guy in his mid 20's paying for an item below QR10 with his debit card, that would surely be me...and wouldn't mind if you greeted me.
Signing out,
mojo1981 (frustrated over change)
Thats so annoying, i wouldnt mind it so much if the gum they give you is edible, chewing that gum is like chewing cardboard..
Giving it to charity is a great idea...
I get irritated with that.
I don't want some stupid sweet.
I don't mind if they put that 50dhs in the charity box, but give me my money.

hi mallrat, the heat is damaging.
well the next time they hand you a gum you can decline it instead request the 50dms or whatever change they owe you. if they dont have then they have to look in other counters...

one time I paid something around 53.50 and the guy pick up one chewing gum and add it so i have to pay 54 ... that time i was really pissed of ... I told him who asked you to buy that thing in my behalf? I don't want it and I want my 50 drhms now ... he said that it is already in the bill and he can't do anything and i told him ok ... where is your manager? I want to see him right now and i'm not going to pay anything and will leave all of these goodies and you look for someone to pay you ... someone came and was asking what is the issue and i told him .. so he was speaking to him in their language so i could not understand ... in the end I paid what am i supposed to paid for what i want to buy ...
Since when these guys got the courage to punch extra items and make you pay for it? The issue is not in the 50 drhms as much in being rude and do that in front of me , trying to be smart that you fixed the issue ...

or maybe this change can go towards a labourers fund and to be utilised when their sponsor goes awol on them.
I was reading another post which was stated that their are labourer who walk 4-5 hours to get to the labour department only to wait and walk back and forth.

The practice of giving sweets instead of change has been in practice for a long time. I always refuse the sweets. Then they have to give me change.
Dasman has a much better system They give you a coupon for the 50 or 25 dhs change you are supposed to get. This coupon is for charity and you put it in one of the charity boxes at the exit.
This is the win win solution and I recommend you all start requesting charity coupons at your stores. However you must ask for them as the cashiers are more ready to give you sweets rather than the coupons.

I like that last comment, now that ive distracted everyone, i myself will get back to completing my thesis..had my 15min worth of fame....adios guys.
i noticed here in qatar that it was already a practise... a very bad practise... actually, with that practise you can see them how unfair these stores and groceries management are...for sure they know about this...poor cashiers...they are the only one left to be blame..., why?because it should be the management responsibility to arrange good change fund from the bank.... or maybe entire qatar system is running a service oriented business are not aware of how it shoud really run...fair business is service... honest transaction is business... transaction ended with a smile is of course good business... and how will you call business that end transaction by giving you a cheap chewing gum rather giving you your HONEST change??? is it monkey business??? NYAHAHAHAHA!!!!! monkey gets rich eehh....
ROBIN!!!??? to the BATCAVE!!! & leave the monkey behind...http://www.qatarliving.com/user/spanky1423

I'd do it like this: if it's 25 dirhams, round down; if it's 75 dirhams, round up; if it's 50 dirhams, round it to an even number of riyals (thus sometimes up and sometimes down). Fair enough?
What the poor guy can do if coins are short supply (less circulation than actual demend)Give you a discount ?????????
by no means its bickering and as previously said anything to do with being miser...its just a idea of the service being provided.
Service such as given at Mannai when I give my car in for service, they know exactly what to do, the free car wash and the addition of free car freshner isn't part of the deal but they still give it to you.
THe phone call they make to let you know when your car is ready is also part of the service...but not mandatory.
On the other hand, when the correct change is required the chewing gum is presented so how on earth will i give that 50dhs to some other vendor?
My suggestion would be to round down or up the values.
You guys just have to get me started on the shopping centre service, like putting your own groceries in the bag at carrfour..not to mention they shove the items down the scanner then push you to pay so they can attend to the next person.
For that I normally take my time putting in the grocery while everyone behind gets irritated and then I pay at my liesure....its all about service.
mojo1981
well if they dont have anything i take the chewing gum and give it to the cashier back.. lol..
you r corek.

The Centre round it off to the nearest Riyal If the cost is 11.50 they take QR 11 only.
Btw if chewing Gus case Just take it give to your Teaboy, security guard as I do.
Dont complain & QL Is not a place for this....
its just small change but if they do it all the time, it becomes irritating and they dont accept your payment if you're 50dms short...

its like they are forcing you to buy the chewing gum... which is the irritating part.. lol...
deepmidoff.. lol.. its not about th 50dh.. u might well round it off to the nearest riyal.. who wants to carry change or carry some batook chewing gums.. lol..
Why you all are bickering about 25/50 Dirams. Typhical expats :(
i think govt need not be involed... shopkeepers just do it to make a lil more money.. imagine 100 ppl a day with the 50 dh.. = 50 Riyalz... but lil do they understand that the customers get irritated with it...
Similar case with taxis, most drivers dont give you the 25 or 50 dirhams change. The worst thing is, for a fare of QR12.25, drivers usually round it off to QR13.
.
that's why i always have my coin purse with me.

why not the government should order everyone to roundoff their prices and phase out the dirhams?
I suggested hat they do away with the 0.50 or 0.75 on prices.
i go buy somethin i want with the 50dh.. else if he gives me the coins i keep it in my car so i can give it back whenever possible...
actually if you see.. manys hope have wierd pricing so that they have the 50dh left..
Cashiers should prepare 50dms or any cent change. notice the prices of goods are seldom rounded off. they have to anticipate this.

if the cost is QR2.50 they ask me for the 50, but like you said, no change, just sweets, I was given chocolate one day last week, I had been dieting that week so could have strangled her!!!!
LOL, I've done the same at Carrefour. They gave me a chewing gum as change and the following day I gave it back to them. Of course they didn't accept it. So now I do the same, I usually pay with my debit card cos I refuse to get chewing gum as change.
