Buying a 2nd hand Jeep in Qatar - bad idea?

Hi,
I need a car, and my budget is around 20-25k. I've been looking at some ads here, and it looks like I can get a Jeep Cherokee 98 model or so, for that price.

Is it difficult/expensive to get Jeeps repaired in Doha?

I've heard that there's a law coming that prohibits cars older than 15 years in Doha. Anyone know more about this? I'll stay here until summer 2010 probably.

Is there any other brands/models I should look into? I'd like to have a 4x4, but it's not necessary. I somehow find the prices on the older Jeeps suspiciously cheap..

I know that most 10 year old jeeps are probably driven to death here, but at the same time, I guess they could last for another couple of years.. If I can sell the car for approx. the same price or a bit less I'm happy, but I don't want to buy a newer car as the value will drop quite a lot.

Any thoughs/suggestions?

thanks.

abc150:

well. if I spend 20k on a car, I can probably sell it for 12-13k in a few years. If I spend 90k on a newer car, I'll be lucky if I can sell it for 50k two years later. My point is, I don't want to spend a lot of money, so even though I might have to repair it once in a while, it'll still be worth it.

That brings me to my next point - I know there is a jeep dealership, but will most local garages repair it as well? I've heard the dealership repair shops can be quite expensive. What about spare parts? haha, sounds like I'm going to wreck this car. I just want to know a little about this before I buy, as I don't wanna end up with a 20k repair bill.

thanks for your answers

I've been happy with the Jeep I bought second hand. As for reselling it for the same or a bit less in two years time, that's perfectly possible. Cars hold their value well here, and I still see people selling the same model as mine for more than I paid for it a year ago.

(we bought it used) They are very much in demand here. He constantly has people putting notes on his windshield asking him to call them if it is for sale. We have not had to have much work done on it. There is a jeep dealership/repair shop here. Like all cars in Doha, it requires a new battery much faster than it normally would elsewhere (heat and sand are bad for cars)

How can you expect to buy a car, use it for around two years and then sell it "for approx. the same price or a bit less".
