Opel reveals the GT concept.
Opel is set to unveil the GT concept in March at the Geneva motor show. The concept was inspired by the 1966 Vauxhall XVR(below).Being the second attempt to recreate the GT theme, the first being the Pontiac Solstice-derived GT from 2007 which didn't do well commercially.
Opel GT concept was a joint idea of advanced design director, Friedhelm Engler, and Boris Jacob, chief advanced concept designer. The model does not have door handles or side mirrors, in order to get into the vehicle you would need to press the touch pad which is integrated into the roof of the red line. Two cameras which are placed behind the wheel arches have the function of mirrors, they designed to project the footage on two monitors placed inside the vehicle.
Under the bonnet sits a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo producing 143bhp,and is tuned to develop 205Nm of torque. This is linked to a six-speed auto gearbox, directing power to the rear wheels. A sub-1,000kg kerbweight ensures the GT Concept can accelerate from 0-62mph in less than eight seconds and hit a top speed of 134mph.
Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann who talks about seeing the brand with a “fresh pair of eyes.” gave us the opportunity to get a partial reveal of the concept, which so far looks like a sleek, advanced sports car.
