A "Subsidy" is a benefit given by a government usually in the form of tax reductions. It is given to remove some type of burden and is often considered to be in the interest of the public. For example in the case of electricity, a government may be bearing part of the cost of the production with the public bearing the other part. Removing a subsidy or lowering it by the government, will lead to the public bearing a higher cost of that item.
