Politicians in other countries make a habit of over-emphasizing how much crime there is in their societies, and then announce big plans on how they will reduce it.

It's a fear factor thing - if you don't vote for me, you will be mugged while walking down the street by drug pushing prostitutes.

Conversely there are other countries that try to keep perceptions of crime very low. They want people to feel safe and secure, so that they are grateful to their leader for doing such a good job.
