I've asked several people where they are from and they'll say, "India" or "Pakistan" or "England" or whatever. The people will rarely get more detailed than that, unless I ask for specifics.
When I'm asked, I say, "the US" and if asked, "Where in the US?" I'll then say, "Texas."
NOW, in the US, I am (of course) more specific and say "Houston"--people just know that Houston is in Texas.
