Keith, sounds like you grew up in the same kind of home I did. As often as I have heard people say "I will never grow up to be like my mother/father" never really made much sense to me. My Mom also worked, didnt need to, and still used to come home to clean the house etc as your mother did. I laugh now because she still babied him.
People arent threatened by their partners if they are secure in who they are and what their relationship is. I think a lot of this idea of feeling threatened by a sucessful wife is not because of her acheivements but because of her partners lack of self-esteem and confidence.
My parents have been married for over 50 years, if it worked for them why not for me?
